What happened, bro?
June 28, 2008, 3:31 AM
Police got a call complaining of a man in a red van who urinated in the middle of the street at Ridgeland and Ogden. A responding officer found a red van at Ogden and Elmwood; it was stopped in both the eastbound and westbound lanes of Ogden. A trail of liquid, possibly urine, lay one foot south of the van. The driver was unconscious at the wheel and slumped sideways. The van was in drive; the driver had one foot on the brake pedal and wore no seat belt. Police put the van in park and had trouble waking the driver, who smelled of alcohol. Once he was awake, the driver said in English, “What happened, bro?” and “It’s ok, it’s ok.” After that, because of the man’s limited English, the conversation switched into Spanish.
When asked if he knew what happened, the man said no. He reportedly told police he was trying to get home to the area of 47th and Ashland in Chicago; however, that would have been east, and the van was facing west. The driver failed field sobriety tests and his blood alcohol level was .291—more than triple the legal limit for DUI.
Elias Castaneda, 26, of the 4600 block of Paulina, Chicago, was charged with two felonies: felony DUI with no valid license, and felony DUI with no insurance. In addition, Castaneda was charged with improper parking in the roadway, obstructing traffic, using the wrong lane, not wearing a seat belt, driving unlicensed and uninsured, DUI, and DUI with blood-alcohol of over .08.

One offender reportedly raised his hands and said, “You want to go, m@*#&$f(@*#r? “ as the second offender picked up a rock and held it as if ready to throw it at the victims. The male victim told the two men to “relax”; the offenders remounted the bicycle and continued southward. Because it was so dark, the victims said, they could only describe the offenders as males of medium build, around 5’10”.
