Hoosiers choose Berwyn to stage street fight

August 30, 2008, 2:44 AM
Police responding to reports of a fight in the street came to the 2500 block of Harvey, where a 21-year-old man said he had just been punched by his girlfriend.  The woman then fled, as a passenger, in a white Cadillac.  The victim, a resident of Whiting, Indiana, said he had argued with his 18-year-old girlfriend—also a Whiting resident—before she hit him in the head and tore his shirt.

Other officers stopped the Cadillac at 24th and Lombard.  The offender was, indeed, a passenger in the vehicle, but the victim refused to sign complaints.  A 1.75 liter bottle of Absolut Vodka, sans cap, could be seen in the back pocket of the front passenger seat.  Driver Alma Cabrera, 30, of the 2700 block of Highland, received a ticket for transporting open alcohol.

Officer assisting someone with directions is interrupted by super-loud Monte Carlo

August 29, 2008, 12:49 PM
An officer at Oak Park and Roosevelt had exited his squad car in order to help a motorist with directions when a maroon Monte Carlo approached; its stereo announced its arrival half a city block before the car actually appeared. The officer approached the Monte Carlo driver and requested his license and insurance.  The driver reportedly asked, “What for?” The officer explained Berwyn’s noise ordinance, then asked the driver to step out.  Again the driver asked “What for?” and was told it was because the car needed to be towed to the impound yard as a consequence of the noise violation.  The other consequence, of course, was the $500 fee attached to the noise ticket issued to driver Richard Crayton of the 7600 block of Madison in Forest Park.

Abandoned house, yard, garage crammed with garbage; trashcans remain pristine

August 29, 2008, 10:30 AM
An animal complaint led police to a house in the 6700 block of Riverside Drive.  An officer approaching the front of the house saw numerous trash items --including beer bottles and a skateboard—leading to and lying on the steps and porch of the house.  A look in the front window revealed there was no furniture; however, garbage and children’s toys could be seen scattered throughout.  In the back yard was a large amount of garbage, and it appeared to the officer that almost every object in the back yard was broken.  These items included a chair, an adult bike, a kid’s bike, a bed, a grill and many other things described as being in “sub-par condition”

The garage had been padlocked, but both doors were kicked in.  Lots of trash lay in the garage, including paper plates that had been used to hold food.  Graffiti was found inside the garage.  A room in the garage was so crammed with Christmas decorations, the officer was unable to enter it.

Four trash cans stood behind the house; all were empty, and appeared never to have been used.  The officer believed the house was abandoned and stood in a condition that left it unsafe to live in; it may have been used by homeless people.
