Man accused of attacking woman postal carrier, then injuring Berwyn officers

November 1, 2008, 12:32 PM
A female postal carrier called police after an apparently disturbed male followed her down the street, commandeered her mail cart and choked her as she attempted to deliver mail in the 1400 block of Clinton.  When police told the young man to stop, he walked away, yelling “F^@% You!”, then came at an officer aggressively.  Paul Olivo, 17, of 1337 Home, kept repeating, “someone is coming”. During a patdown, Olivo headbutted an officer, knocking him to the ground and rendering him unconscious.  A second officer tackled Olivo and tried to secure him in handcuffs, but Olivo punched him.  Two officers were needed to cuff Olivo, who continued to kick, spit and disobey commands.  Pepper spray was needed just to get him inside the squad car, which he damaged by kicking.  Bystanders watching the incident kept advising police to “shoot him!”

Olivo was taken to the hospital for pepper spray removal.  At MacNeal, he continously yelled “I’m going to kill you n!&&@$!” and spat at police and hospital security guards.  Six officers were needed to restrain him; finally, Olivo had to be sedated.

The postal carrier said that when Olivo approached her he seemed to be under the influence of drugs, or else mentally unstable.  She said he kept insisting people were “coming to get him,” blocked her path, grabbed her by the throat and threatened her, stating “I will f^@%!#G kill you!”

After being read his rights, Olivo told police he had been drinking beer since 1 AM.  In his statement, he said he thought police “ganged up on him”, adding that he does get violent when drinking.  Olivo was charged with seven felonies:  three felony counts of aggravated battery against each of the two officers, and one count of felony criminal damage to property for damaging the squad car.

A witness in the 1800 block of Home saw a man in red and black face paint holding a four-foot long sword at his crotch.  The man was making stroking motions on the sword, as well as emitting sounds and making remarks as if engaged in sexual intercourse.  Since it was Halloween, and many small children were on the streets able to see and hear this exhibition, the witness told the sword-molester to stop it.  The offender reportedly answered that he was performing these acts for the benefit of the complainant’s child.  Police arrested Jaime Rojas, 22, of 1505 Wenonah, and confiscated the sword.  Rojas was charged with disorderly conduct, with a court date of 9 AM December 3rd in room 101 at Maybrook courthouse.
