August 19, 2008, 4:27 PM
The owners of an auto-repair business at 16th and Ridgeland told police a man paid for repairs to his 1998 Buick with a personal check for more than $600, but the checked bounced because the account on which it drew was closed. August 19, 2008, 2:40 PM
The manager of “What a Gem” jewelry store, 6333 Cermak, told police a woman came in and asked what the store would pay her for a gold necklace and bracelet, and offered the pieces for inspection. The jewelry store offered $700 for both and returned them to the woman. The woman then reportedly picked up the jewelry, said she’d have to think about it, then set down on the counter a necklace and bracelet identical to the pieces she showed initially. The lookalike pieces were chemically tested and proved not to be real gold.
When police arrived, Esther M. Gonzalez, 30, of 2704 37th Place, Chicago, said she had no other jewelry, then allegedly stated “I tried to switch” the jewelry, and produced the genuine gold items from inside her shirt. She was charged with attempted theft.

A Cicero police detective working a burglary case contacted Berwyn police after a burglary call turned out to have begun in Berwyn. On August 18 at 11:50 PM, Cicero police, responding to a burglary-in-progress call, came to the 1800 block of 59th Ct in Cicero and found three males standing in front of a residence, next to a Chevy Lumina. The third person, Anthony D. Hernandez, 30, of the 1400 block of Home, told officers he had Ramirez drive him to the 3400 block of Grove to the home of his stepmother. There, he said, he climbed in through the bedroom window and removed a safe, a laptop and a plasma TV. He told police he was aware that none of those items belonged to him.
The victim, a 38-year-old woman, told police Hernandez had been told as long as five years ago that he was unwelcome at the Grove address.
Hernandez and Ramirez were each charged with one count of felony burglary. Berwyn detectives notified the Illinois Dept. of Corrections, since Hernandez had recently been paroled following a burglary charge.
