Old: “Do you know who I am?” New: “Do you know who my mother is?”

May 12, 2007, 8:04 PM
An officer at Cermak Plaza noticed a 2005 Hyundai Sonata parked in the clearly-posted fire lane, with an infant being held by the driver, who sat in the driver’s seat.  When asked why the car was in the fire lane, 22-year-old driver James P Pointer, of the 400 block of S. Kenilworth, Oak Park, said “because my girlfriend is inside the store returning some things.” Asked why the baby was not in a carseat, Pointer said “because I’m not driving.” The officer could see that the car’s keys were in the ignition, the engine was running and the hazard lights were flashing.
When asked to show his license and insurance, the driver responded, “I don’t have to show you nothing.  I don’t have a driver’s license, I wasn’t driving so stop harassing me.” The officer advised Pointer that when the girlfriend returned, he would be arrested for driving with a suspended license; the child and the car would be turned over to her, and the driver would need $200 cash bound to get out of jail.  Pointer stated, “I got 10 $100 bills in my pocket right now. $200 ain’t shit. You’re just picking on me because you’re short with a badge and a gun.”
As he had been warned, Pointer was placed in custody when the girlfriend returned. He would not cooperate when asked his name, so his fingerprints were used to establish his identity. The girlfriend, Melia G. Horton, told the officer, “Do you know who my mother is?  What’s your name and badge number? Give me your card, I’m telling my mother.”
Once in booking, the driver finally told police his name. He was cited for parking where prohibited, failing to secure a child under four in a proper restraint, not wearing a seatbelt, no proof of insurance and driving on a suspended license.
