Man with insufficient driving credentials disobeys obvious sign

A posted no left turn sign did not prevent a red Nissan pickup from making that turn anyhow from northbound Ridgeland onto westbound Stanley .  The driver, a 36-year-old man living in the 3100 block of Scoville, had no ID except for his Mexican ID card.  He received tickets for disobeying the sign, for driving with expired plates and for driving with no license.

Woman-slugger flees scene

A 26-year-old woman in the 7100 block of 26th told police her boyfriend accused her of cheating on him and punched her in the face several times, leaving it visibly bruised.  She ran outside; he fled in a maroon Ford Taurus.  When found, the 29-year-old Chicago man will be charged with domestic battery.

Man with six violations ignores police instructions

An officer saw an Olds sedan with expired plates and an unbelted driver and signaled it to stop in the alley of the 1800 block of Gunderson.  Instead, the driver pulled into a garage at the end of the block.  A four-year-old child was found in the back, not restrained in a car seat.  The 28-year-old man driving was wanted on a Vermilion County arrest warrant.  He was cited for wearing no seatbelt, having a small child not restrained in a carseat, no proof of insurance, expired registration, suspended registration, and driving with a suspended license.

The staring, limping stranger

A young woman in the 1800 block of Oak Park Avenue told police she went to her garage and got into her car with her child.  She opened the overhead door and saw a man in sunglasses looking at her.  When the man saw her, he removed the shades and looked at everything in her garage, including the address number.  Then he walked southbound down the alley, looking into other yards.  She described the stranger as a white male in his 40s, 5’7”, medium build, with dark hair, sunglasses, jeans and a teal shirt.  The man walked with a limp.

Coin thief scared off by victim’s kin

A man saw a stranger sitting inside his uncle’s Mercury Tracer in the 6900 block of Roosevelt, counting coins.  When the offender saw the nephew, he fled westbound on Roosevelt. The nephew stated he could identify the offender and help create a composite image for police.  He described the man as a 5’10” black male in his 20s, medium build, wearing a grey sleeveless shirt and jeans.

Chevy stolen

A 73-year-old man from the 3700 block of Cuyler reported the theft of his blue 1999 Chevy Malibu.  The sedan had special vanity plates.

A man and woman cohabiting in the 1900 block of Grove had been drinking in a bar, but argued once they got home. The man told the woman to get out.  She refused, so he pushed her out the door and shut it behind her.  The 24-year-old woman kicked the door in and came after him, nails flying.  Police could see the scratches on his neck.  The man left for the night and would not sign a complaint.

Battery in the ER

While in MacNeal hospital’s emergency room on an unrelated matter, an officer saw a male patient jump out of his bed to punch a woman twice in the face.  A woman friend of the victim explained the situation to police.  The offender was the victim’s ex-boyfriend.  He was in the ER because he had been hurt in a fist fight that took place in a bar where the two women work.  The 37-year-old man, resident of the 6800 block of Windsor, has a history of aggression toward the victim. The victim came to the ER at his request.  The offender was charged with one count of domestic battery, tentatively upgraded to two counts of aggravated battery.

An officer stopped a white Camry at Cermak and Grove after it changed lanes several times without signaling.  The driver, 26-year-old Luis Omar Cruz of Oak Park, was cited for improper lane usage, no driver’s license and no insurance.

Wanted man violates fireworks ordinance

Police caught a 25-year-old man setting off fireworks in the 6500 block of 18th.  The man, who lives in the 1800 block of Harvey, is wanted on warrants in both Cook and DuPage counties.

Overdressed litterer

An officer saw a man tossing trash from his pockets onto the sidewalk as he walked westbound on 16th near Wisconsin.  When asked why he did this, the man did not answer.  Despite the 81 degree heat, the man wore a fleece shirt and a winter jacket.  Because of area burglaries, the officer frisked the offender. The patdown caused some empty, clear, drug-type baggies to fall from the man’s jacket. Further search recovered a half-smoked marijuana cigarette and a clear baggy of marijuana. Michael E. Chaney, 31, no address, was charged with possession of marijuana.

Sideswiper long gone

A 28-year-old Cicero woman who works at Turano, 6501 Roosevelt, called Berwyn police. She reporting she left work, walked to her Mercury Tracer parked on Roosevelt, and found damage on the driver’s side door and tire.

Smoke, explosions and smoking

Detectives heard fireworks from within Smrz Park, 3400 Highland; they also saw teens in the park and smelled black powder in the air.  When the detectives asked who set off the fireworks, nobody would admit to it.  A patdown of one boy, a 16-year-old from the 1200 block of Wenonah, turned up a glass pot pipe.  The boys were told to turn out their pockets. The 16-year-old also had a key-chain holder containing marijuana. The other boy, a 15-year-old from the 1900 block of Euclid, had a pack of cigarettes.  The older boy was turned over to his father, who must take him for a drug ; he will also do 16 hours of community service.  The younger boy was ticketed for possession of tobacco by a minor.
