Western Springs-owned Pontiac hits house, takes off; teen driver suspected

December 5, 2008, 6:43 PM
A property owner in the 1500 block of Gunderson showed police the damage left behind after a Pontiac Grand Prix hit his house.  Bushes were ripped from the ground and there was damage to the bricks.  A piece of a white bumper was left behind.  A witness told police he saw the white Pontiac flee north through the 1400 block of Gunderson/Elmwood alley.  Police located the Pontiac—still hot, and parked but unoccupied—in front of 1246 Elmwood.  The Pontiac was registered to the 4400 block of Clausen, Western Springs.  Police called the owners to ask in whose possession their car was supposed to be:  the answer was their 17-year-old daughter. Police informed the teen’s mom of the hit and run.  The mom called police back to say she spoke to the teen, who denied being in an accident.  Police restated what happened.  An additional report explaining what happened next (and, one can only hope, including some sort of punishment for irresponsible driving) was missing from those made available this week.

Woman gets her point across with steak knife

December 5, 2008, 6:43 PM
Dispatchers sent police to an apartment in the 6600 block of Windsor on reports of a stabbing.  A 66-year-old woman met police at the door with her hands up and in plain view; she stated “I don’t have the knife any more, it’s in the kitchen”.  Behind her stood an intoxicated 60-year-old Cicero man, using his right hand to hold his left arm against his left side.  Large blood stains could be seen on his shirt.  The victim stated, “She put the knife away”.  Police arrested the woman.  There was blood on the couch, the dining room carpet, the kitchen floor, a kitchen chair, and on paper towels in the trash.  Also at the scene was a long-sleeved blue shirt covered with a large amount of blood.  Two steak knives, eight and nine inches long, lay in the sink.  The victim was taken to Loyola medical center for surgery.

After being read her rights, Helen Barry, 66, of 6606 Windsor, agreed to make a statement to police.  According to the report, Barry said she and the victim had been dating for two years, were both alcoholics, and had been drinking for two days straight.  On the date of the stabbing, she said, the man sat beside her and “put his hand under my butt because he was cold”.  The woman said she told him to stop but “he would not listen”.  A 20-30 minute argument ensued and the woman said she told the man to leave but he still would not listen.  Barry reportedly stated she called 911, but the man ripped the phone from her hand; she told him to leave several more times before resorting to the steak knife.  She was charged with domestic battery and unlawful use of a weapon.

After his surgery the victim told police he remembers very little because of the “vast amounts of rum” he had consumed; he refused to sign a complaint against Barry,

A Berwyn detective went to Loyola to check on the victim’s condition.  Loyola security personnel, the report said, were uncooperative and would not allow the detective access, telling him to wait in the lobby for the charge nurse.  While waiting, the detective saw many people gain access to the emergency room without being required to show any type of visitor’s badge, and without being stopped by security.  Finally, the “charge nurse” appeared.  She, too, refused to cooperate, by refusing to provide any information except the fact that the victim needed surgery.  She told the detective to try calling the main hospital number later.

Basement-dwelling son abandons elderly mom in all-night drugstore

December 5, 2008, 1:22 AM
Dispatchers sent police to Walgreen’s in Cermak Plaza to assist a citizen.  An 84-year-old woman had been abandoned at the pharmacy.  The victim said her son, who is 59 years old and lives in her basement, dropped her off at Walgreen’s around 11 PM, then left.  Police found the elderly woman was very weak, had trouble standing and needed help to walk.  They drove her home to the 1800 block of Clarence.  While officers helped the woman inside the house, her son approached but said nothing*.

When police asked the man for ID, he said he did not have any.  When asked what happened, the son, stated he got tired of waiting for his mother and decided to go home.  Asked why he did not walk inside Walgreen’s to look for her instead of just taking off, the son reportedly said she could find her own way home.  Police asked how the elderly woman could be expected to do that at 1:30 in the morning, in 10 degree weather.  The son reportedly stated his mother could have called her daughter or a taxicab.
