Cannabis, strange powder, found in car with solo headlight

A grey Chevy Malibu with only one headlight and no rear license plate light attracted the notice of an officer at 19th and Oak Park Avenue.  The officer stopped the Chevy and, while speaking with the driver, observed a clear bag of marijuana on the seat between driver and passenger.  Both men were asked to step out of the car.  The passenger, a 50-year-old man from the 1900 block of Grove, had in his pocket five packets of a white powdery substance which, he said, was a crushed headache powder known as “BCs”.  Driver Lonnie Bradford, 36, of the 3800 block of W. Polk, Chicago, was cited for having one headlight; no rear plate light; no seatbelt; driving with a suspended license; and improper use of registration.  Both men were charged with cannabis possession.

Clumsy burglar sets off car alarm

A man in the 3500 block of Ridgeland told police he checked his garage after hearing his car alarm sounding off inside it.  He looked out and saw someone run out the garage service door and head north up the alley.  The service door and been forced, damaging the frame, but nothing was missing.

Jail upsets man who threatened woman’s life

A 49-year-old woman told police her 32-year-old ex-boyfriend found her in a bar on 26th St. and threatened her life and property.  She reported the man said he was going to blow her car up with her in it, then said he would break into her home to take items he believes are his.  The man lived with the victim until six weeks ago.  At 2 AM, police saw the ex-boyfriend riding a silver Mongoose bike one block from the woman’s house.  Police arrested him and charged him with assault.  Later, in the lockup, the man said he was having an anxiety attack and was taken to MacNeal Hospital for evaluation.

Would-be burglar unable to remove AC unit

A man in an apartment in the 6900 block of 33rd was in bed when he heard a noise at the window.  When he heard it again, he looked outside and saw a man in a white T-shirt running away.  On the ground outside lay some of the pieces of wood that held the man’s airconditioner unit in place in his window.

Criminal damage to car in driveway

A man from the 6500 block of 33rd parked his car in his driveway and ten minutes later heard a window break.  He found the Volkswagen with a brick thrown at its windshield.

Berwyn bike cops impound noise offenders

A bicycle patrol officer stopped a car with a loud car stereo as it headed east on Cermak near Elmwood.  The driver was a 21-year-old man from the 2400 block of Gunderson. Another bike patrol impound occurred at 19th and Harvey, where an officer stopped an old grey Chevy Caprice for excessive noise.  The driver, Philip D. Blake, 27, of Maywood, was cited for suspended plates and no insurance as well as the noise violation.  The Caprice was registered to a woman in the 300 block of south Austin in Oak Park.  A custodial search of the Chevy revealed a JL Audio 33/4 amplifier and a JL speaker box with four 12-inch subwoofers.

Automobile purchase left no money for plates

Police stopped a maroon Olds Cutlass on Cermak near Wesley because the plates were not only suspended, they were registered to a different car.  The driver, a 59-year-old resident of the Berwyn Hotel, told police a mechanic gave him the plates to use when he bought the Olds, because once he paid for the car, he could not afford license plates.  He was cited for the two plate violations and for driving without insurance.

Wallet stolen from stoop

A man who had been sitting on his front stoop in the 1800 block of Oak Park Avenue said he left his wallet outside and went in to answer the phone.  When he returned, his wallet was no longer there.  The 32-year-old said the wallet held $100, a $60 Illinois state tax refund check, his state ID, and his and his son’s Social Security cards.

PM graffiti finds

In the 6300 block of Roosevelt, unreadable white writing was found on the side of a building, done in white spray paint.  In the 2800 block of Wisconsin, someone defaced a brick garage with gang graffiti.  And in the 2800 block of Home/Wenonah alley, police found six garbage cans marked with gang graffiti done in black and white.

Incompetent parking calls attention to suspended driver

An officer in an unmarked squad noticed a driverless gold 2007 Olds Intrigue blocking traffic while double-parked in the 1300 block of Wisconsin.  Next, a man in his 20s entered the Olds and backed into another car while trying to parallel park.  The officer identified himself and pointed out what the driver had done.  The man said the car was his sister’s and he was just parking it for her.  He was ticketed for improper parking in the roadway and driving with a suspended license.

Rottweiler earns kibble

A woman from the 3300 block of Kenilworth reported someone tried to get into her residence at 3 AM.  The victim heard someone turning the knob on her basement door, then try the patio door.  Her brother’s pet Rottweiler growled at the time of the incident, which may have scared the intruder away.

KFC robbed by man with gun

Dispatchers alerted to an armed robbery sent police to the KFC in the 6200 block of Cermak.  Witnesses reported a man showed a handgun to the cash register clerk and said “Nobody move!  Give me all the money out of the cash register—hurry, hurry!” The offender jumped over the countertop and stood beside the employee at the register.  Witnesses described him as a skinny black male, about 30, dressed in black jeans, a black jacket and “big” white gym shoes. He had some sort of mask partly covering his face, and may have worn glasses with orange-tinted lenses.  One witness described him as “cross-eyed.” The manager supplied police with security-camera video.  Police got shoeprints from the countertop and fingerprints from a door handle believed to have been used by the robber.

All sorts of ID stolen from unlocked car

A man living in the 1900 block of Clarence told police he parked his car at 16th and Wesley on June 6, leaving the vehicle unlocked.  The victim reported someone entered the car and stole a pouch containing his credit cards, driver’s license and state ID, and his firearms owners ID.

Broken items

June 11, 2007
Someone broke a window of a Ford Explorer parked in the 2600 block of Kenilworth.  In the 7100 block of 28th, a woman reported being afraid of her 50-year-old son because he got mad and broke some flower pots.  The son, age 50, was charged with one count of criminal damage to property.
