Settlement reached in driving dispute
June 30, 2008
Police in the 6500 block of Stanley encountered two men arguing over a driving incident. One man, a 43-year-old Berwyn resident, told police he shoved the other man away in self defense. The other man, the victim said, punched him in the face, leaving a mark and breaking his glasses. Police arrested the offender, a 38-year-old man from the 2200 block of south Avers, Chicago. Ultimately, the offender offered $100 in compensation to the victim. The victim chose not to sign a complaint.

Stealing from a nun

A nun told police that while he was shopping at Walgreen’s in Cermak Plaza, someone stole her wallet out of her purse. The wallet contained an ID, a credit card and $50 cash. The victim told police she suspected a man who stood very close to her in one store aisle, asking her what lotion she recommends.

That smell

Police received complaints about the smell of marijuana smoke issuing from a building in the 1300 block of Gunderson, as well as a steady stream of teens and young adults entering the house. Drug activity is suspected.

I dreamed I was driving

Police encountered a 1998 Ford Truck stopped in the westbound lane of Cermak at Ridgeland. The truck was in drive and its brake lights were one. The driver was asleep. Police woke the 28-year-old man, a resident of the 1400 block of Maple, and learned his license had been taken away by the State. The truck was impounded. The driver was cited for driving on a revoked license, no insurance and improper parking in the roadway.

Found on a Monday: gang graffiti galore

Police found gang graffiti on two garages in the 2200 block of Home, and on another in the 2300 block. There was more of the same on a garage in the 2200 block of Grove and on three in the 2200 block of Clinton.

More of the same, found on a garage in the 6800 block of 22nd.

Even more gang graffiti, this time on the alley wall of a medical office in the 3200 block of Harlem. Later in the day, more graffiti was found at two other addresses in the same block.

Someone drew gang graffiti on the front porch of a house in the 2300 block of Gunderson.

Wanted for drug possession

An officer responding to a call about a disturbance in the 1800 block of Harlem alley saw no disturbance, but did see a 19-year-old woman who said her brother had caused a problem at her home on the block and was asked to leave. She said he fled at the sight of police. A check of the man’s name revealed an active no-bond arrest warrant out of Cook County for possession of a controlled substance. Police caught sight of the man in the cemetery west of the 1800 block of Harlem, but lost him. When the officer returned to the young woman’s address, the man was seen standing out front. After another foot chase, police arrested Anthony J. Arnone, 21, of Cicero, and processed him for the warrant.

Bar altercation crosses street

Police saw several men yelling at each other inside the Mobil Gas station store, 6701 Cermak. One man—a 38-year-old resident of the 1400 block of Clinton—told police he had gone to a bar across the street to collect his 23-year-old girlfriend. The woman, however, did not wish to leave, so the bar owner asked the man to leave. The man admitted he called the bar-owner an insulting name and told him not to get involved; he also insulted several other people in the process. When the offender left, the insulted persons followed him across the street. The offender was sent on his way after it was made clear to him that he was no longer welcome in the bar.

Death on the BNSF tracks

A woman was seen with her head down, slowly crossing the Burlington Northern train tracks at Oak Park Avenue. She did not respond when the conductor sounded the train’s horn. The engineer told police he heard the impact when the train struck the woman: Linda L. Barkley, 57, of the 6700 block of Stanley. Items recovered after the accident included a duffel bag, a walking cane and a rosary.
Man delivers pizza, almost gets robbed

A 34-year-old North Riverside man told police he was delivering a pizza to an apartment in the 1800 block of Elmwood when a man tried to rob him. The victim said he was leaving the building when a man stopped him in the stairway, reached under his hoodie and said “you know what I got under here. Give me the money.” Instead, the victim fled back to the pizza-orderer’s apartment to call 911; he said he can identify the offender. The victim described the would-be robber as a male Hispanic in his 20s, 140 lbs, bald with a goatee, dressed in dark pants and a grey hoodie.

Kid on lap at home, ok. In front seat—makes a messy airbag

In the 1900 block of Clarence, police stopped a green Ford Econoline van after seeing a little child in the lap of a front seat passenger. When the van was pulled over, police noticed there were actually two children on the front seat and a teenage girl lying down on the floor of the cargo area. Driver Francisco J. Sanchez, 37, of Cicero, had a suspended license, so the van was impounded. He was charged with driving on a suspended license, no insurance and no seat belt on a passenger.

Shave-headed man seen in mid-vandalism

A witness told police a male in an older red vehicle with temporary plates pulled into the Berwyn Public Library parking lot, 2701 Harlem, and used a bat to strike a blue Cadillac Deville several times; after the offender was done hitting the Caddy, he stopped to remove the temporary plates from the red car before leaving the scene. The witness described the vandal as a male Hispanic, 16-20 years old, in a white T-shirt, with a shaved head.

In the 1200 block of Gunderson, a parked Jaguar was found with gold graffiti sprayed on its roof and entire right side.

Hydrant crash, hit-and-run and no left turn

At Harlem and Ogden, a green Infiniti struck a fire hydrant, breaking off the hydrant and causing heavy damage to both hydrant and car. Driver Michal Knebl, 21, of the 1600 block of Euclid, received tickets for improper lane use, damage to city property, and driving unlicensed and uninsured.

Police noticed a silver Nissan Altima with heavy front-end damage parked in the 1900 block of Cuyler. A wheel was torn off the rim. Scratches in the street, such as would be made by a car driving only on a rim and not a tire, led back to 23rd and Ridgeland. There, police found a parked Yukon with damage leading them to believe it was struck by the Altima. The Altima was registered to a couple in Homer Glen.

A Mitsubishi Galant was stopped by police after it turned left onto East from the alley south of Cermak, despite the clearly posted No Left Turn sign. Driver Fidel Guevara, 40, of the 1200 block of Elmwood, was cited for the forbidden turn, no valid license, and no insurance.
