Woman harassed, berated by laborers brought in to work on neighboring house
May 22, 2007, 9:56 AM
As a woman weeded in her Home Avenue alley the morning of May 21st, she was approached by a stranger who offered to help. Though she told him twice she did not need help, the man just stood and stared as if drunk. He only left when a male neighbor, seeing the situation, shooed him off. The stranger went to a grey car parked on 35th near the alley. When police came, they found the man, who had no ID and needed a Spanish translator. Meanwhile, two men who had been painting a house across the street saw police and said the drunken stranger was a friend of theirs. On May 22, the woman and her male neighbor reported that when police left the scene on the 21st, the men they interviewed stood yelling “bitch”, “whore”, and other offensive things toward her house before returning to their job site in the 7000 block of 35th. The woman told police she feared for herself and her children. When police called one of the men, he told them the drunken man was not a friend, just an acquaintance, who “stays” in Chicago around Irving Park and Kimball. The woman said she will sign complaints when the men are found.
