Berwyn Police Blotter

Unnecessary engine-warming harms environment

September 9, 2008, 7:34 AM

What was the temperature that day—60? 70? Above zero, right?

A schoolchild told police her dad usually “warms the engine” before driving her to school; the practice ended in a call alerting police to a garage fire.
Police arrived to see dark, heavy smoke coming from the garage.  The resident, a 46-year-old man, told officers he started the engine of his Mercury Sable at 7:15 AM, leaving the overhead door open slightly, then left the garage and shut the service door.

About 20 minutes later, he saw smoke coming out the garage’s air vent, and opened the service door.  The car was full of smoke, so he ran to the house to tell someone to call 911.
