Treasure hunt, or pre-need planning?

A shovel was apparently used by persons unknown to dig a 4 foot long by 2 foot wide trench in the grass of a back yard in the 2100 block of Euclid.  The elderly homeowner said the hole was dug sometime between the evening of the 24th and the morning of Christmas Day.
