Berwyn Police Blotter
Thermostat dispute results in threats, jail
December 23, 2007
Police responding to a dispute in the 1800 block of Clarence found an intoxicated 41-year-old man standing in the hallway with a 35-inch-long steel pipe in his left hand and a knife in his right, yelling up the stairs at a 24-year-old building tenant. He and a female tenant told police the armed man was responsible for building maintenance. When the woman complained that it was only 60 degrees in her apartment, she said the man argued with her. Next, she said, she heard pounding on the back door; believing the maintenance man was drunk and under the impression he had locked himself out, the woman advised him to use the front door instead. At this, she said, he began to make threats. The male tenant said the man brandished a knife with a 7-inch blade, then prodded him with the steel pipe in an apparent effort to provoke an incident. Ray L. Romano, 41, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of aggravated assault.
