“Relax”: hit-and-run victim hangs on to offending car for 75 feet
May 20, 2008, 7:16 PM
Police came to the 2500 block of Lombard after callers reported the offender in a collision with two parked cars was trying to leave the scene. A 48-year-old man from that block told police she saw a black 2-door hit a neighbor’s car, then strike his own vehicle, so he went outside to make sure the offender did not leave before police arrived. The victim said when he saw the driver try to put his car in gear, he reached in and grabbed the driver. The driver reportedly put the car in reverse and backed down Lombard for 25 feet with the victim still hanging on, then drove forward about 50 feet, still unable to shake off the victim. The men argued and the driver finally left the scene, heading east on 25th.
Police later detained a man in the alley behind the 6000 block of 26th, in Cicero. The victim positively identified 20-year-old Fernando Santana of Cicero. He told police that, when the victim initially approached him following the collision, he advised the victim to “relax”, but left because he feared the victim would strike him and also because he did not feel well. Police said Santana was charged with reckless conduct and driving on a suspended license. His car was impounded.
