Berwyn Police Blotter

Reckless speeder gives false name, leads cops on bizarre chase into Cicero

November 3, 2007, 3:55 PM
An officer stopped a red Olds sedan for doing 53 MPH in a 30 MPH zone in the 6400 block of Ogden, and was able to pull the car over at Ogden and Austin.  The driver stated her license was at home, and gave police the name “Drenisha Wideman”, for which no record exists in the state computer files. The officer told the driver to follow him to the Berwyn police station where she could be positively identified.  Twice during the process, the driver began to leave and had to be stopped.  At one point, when the driver was stopped at Park and Ridgeland because of a train, she tried to back up and pass the squad car.  The officer got out of his squad and told the driver the shut off the car. He said it three times, but instead of cooperating, the woman drove directly toward the officer, nearly knocking him down.  She then attempted to flee and elude police by speeding up, disobeying stops, overtaking other cars on both the right and the left, failing to yield at numerous intersections, driving the wrong way on one-way streets, and so forth.  The chase began at Park and Ridgeland, and led police on a strange journey that ended when the Olds suddenly stopped in the middle of the street in the 2500 block of 57th Ct.  The woman got out of the car, ran into an apartment building, and tried to shut the door on the officer.  The officer managed to get inside, but the woman locked herself in a bedroom.  In the bedroom, the highly combative woman lunged toward a dresser, causing police to fear she was going for a weapon. It took three officers to handcuff the kicking and screaming woman whose real name, fingerprints showed, was Easter P. Wright.  Wright was charged with resisting officers, fleeing and eluding police, reckless driving, reckless conduct, and driving without a license.
5:44 PM
Wright remained combative in booking, adding a charge of disorderly conduct to the list.  Four people were needed to restrain her during a search of her person, during which she twisted and pulled away, dropped to the ground and swung her arms.
6 PM
Wright asked to go to the hospital for abdominal pains.  Once at MacNeal, she refused to tell doctors her name or birthdate and yanked the IV and blood-pressure monitors out, so she was returned to jail.
