Reckless conduct, battery charges after run-in between teen pair, mom and daughter

April 2, 2008, 5:25 PM
Callers alerted police to a traffic accident involving a physical fight at 32nd and Home.  A Chevy sedan and a Mercury were involved.  One driver, 19-year-old Jose Aguayo, of the 1400 block of Highland, was bleeding from the right hand.  However, he told police this was not related to the accident; he said he punched a tree in anger after the crash. The other driver, a 40-year-old woman from the 7100 block of Windsor, said she was driving on 32nd with her 14-year-old daughter beside her. As she approached Home, Aguayo’s car pulled up beside her, with his vehicle in the wrong lane.  Then, the woman said, Aguayo and his female passenger yelled for her to pull over and threatened her with physical harm.  Instead of pulling over, the woman drove forward.  At this, she said, Aguayo’s car drove behind hers.  When she turned onto southbound Home, she said, Aguayo drove off the road and up onto the curb in an apparent effort to get the woman to stop, then struck the rear of her car when she slowed down.  Before the woman could exit her car, she said, Aguayo’s passenger—18-year-old Stephanie Stephens of the 3200 block of Clinton—emerged from Aguayo’s car and began to punch the 14-year-old girl, then came at the mom while waving her hands and swearing.  Multiple passersby witnessed the events and agreed with the woman’s account.  Aguayo was arrested and charged with reckless conduct, improper lane use, disobeying a stop sign, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, no insurance, no license on his person, and no seat belts on driver or passenger.  Stephens was charged with assault and battery.
