Railroad safety gates/lights can’t protect you if you disregard them

Police monitoring the Burlington Northern crossings at Harlem and at Oak Park Avenue issued tickets to six people for entering the tracks while the gates were still lowered and the red lights still flashing, in violation of city code (460.04 (c).* They were Michael J. Ridge, 42, of the 1800 block of Maple; Jose Robles, 37, of Riverside; Vivian Perez-Robles, 37, of Riverside; Jamie Dammen, 23, of the 3000 block of Harlem; Jillian Rodriguez, 26, of the 3100 block of Maple; and Robert Jurkovic, 58, of Riverside.

(c) No person shall enter into or cross a railroad grade crossing when a signal device gives notice by flashing red lights, lowered crossing gates, or bells, that such crossing is closed. Such person shall remain outside of the crossing on the far side of the signal, away from the railroad track, until the crossing is opened, as indicated by the cessation of the signal warning.
