Police encounter pot smoke, gang loitering
June 9, 2008, 6:57 PM
Police came to a garage in the 2700 block of Harvey, west side, on reports of people smoking dope there. Officers spoke with resident Mario H. Sandoval, 26, and his guests, Julio S. Jimenez, 18, of Cicero, and a 25-year-old woman from the 1800 block of Euclid. Sandoval told police they were just hanging out. When police asked about the noticeable smell of pot smoke, Sandoval reportedly admitted having smoked a joint during the previous hour. Jiminez was arrested because he had an active warrant out of Cicero. On the floor of the garage lay a clear plastic baggy containing 11.1 grams of marijuana.
Both Jiminez and Sandoval, police said, stated they were members of a street gang; this assertion was confirmed by a computer check of their names. Police met with the property owner, who said he had been asleep and was thus unaware that his stepson was smoking marijuana in his garage. Police warned the homeowner that this is not the first time police have had to come to his house to deal with gang loitering.
Sandoval was cited for pot possession. Jiminez was extradited to Cicero police.
