Police chief, officers converge on disturbance involving bats, metal pipe

April 22, 2008, 2:20 PM
Calls reporting a bat- and pipe-wielding men sent two squad cars and an unmarked car containing Police Chief Kushner to the 2200 block of Elmwood.  Police found and stopped a Ford Bronco matching the description given by callers; the vehicle had a smashed-in passenger window and suspended registration, and the plates were registered to a 1993 Jeep.
The three occupants were ordered out of the Ford.  Checks of the names of the three men cautioned police that all three were admitted members of a street gang.  The driver was a 23-year-old man from the 1500 block of Oak Park.  The passengers were a 20-year-old man from the 1400 block of Elmwood and a 19-year-old man from Cicero.  Police recovered a metal pipe and two baseball bats from the rear of the SUV.  The three men told police that “some guys” threw a rock at the Bronco as they drove.  The passengers were cited for disorderly conduct, with a local ordinance court date of May 15th at 3 PM in the police station.  The driver was arrested because of the suspended registration of the vehicle.  He told police he had just purchased the Bronco and did not change the plates.  He said he knew the plates were wrong and was actually just on his way to get new plates.  Then he ratted out his passengers, telling police they were in a fight with bats they brought along.  The driver said he never got out of the vehicle during the fight and had no idea who the other belligerents were.  The driver got tickets for no front plate, no license on his person, improper use of registration, suspended registration and no proof of insurance.
