Police can’t even finish one Shoe Carnival arrest before having to make another

May 3, 2008, 4:53 PM
A male security guard at Shoe Carnival, Cermak Plaza, detained a 34-year-old Cicero woman.  He told police she was seen in Aisle 10 breaking off a security sensor and concealing a pair of white Puma gym shoes in a bag, then trying to walk out.  Gloria E. Arellano was charged with retail theft.

While police were still present and dealing with the above arrest, a female security guard told police yet another person was trying to leave the store after removing a sensor.  She pointed out a man running west across the parking lot.  An officer ordered the man to stop but he refused.  He was caught on the northwest side of Circuit City following a brief chase.  A search of the man recovered a pair of scissors.  The guard said she saw the man start to remove the sensor from a pair of Air Zoom shoes.  When she approached and told him to stop, she said, the man stood up, cursed and lunged at her aggressively, then fled without the shoes.  He was arrested.  An inventory of his belongings revealed a foil packet in his sweatshirt containing two plastic baggies of a brown substance suspected to be heroin, along with a pink capsule.  After he was read his rights, the man told police he purchased the heroin at 18th and California for $20 and used half of it before his arrival in Berwyn.  The assistant state’s attorney approved a felony upgrade to charges of criminal damage, assault and possession of a controlled substance for Mario J. Reyes, 31, of the 2100 block of west 32nd Place, Chicago.
