Berwyn Police Blotter

Part of the definition of reckless conduct:  throwing lit fireworks toward a police car

July 3, 2008, 8:25 PM
En route to check on some kids playing with a phone and dialing 911 from the 1900 block of Highland, an officer noticed three males at the corner of 19th and Highland.  The three were lighting M-80s and bottle rockets.  One man noticed the officer, then went ahead and lit a bottle rocket.  He threw it toward the officer; the firework exploded underneath squad car #114.  The officer confronted the man, informing him that he had done something illegal.  When the officer asked the offender’s name, the man said, “I forgot my name.” The officer asked two more times; this time, the answer was, “It’s the 4th of July and I am allowed to have fireworks and I am not going to tell you my name.” When the officer attempted to place the man in handcuffs, he pulled away, stating, “You are not locking me up.” Because the man struggled with him, the officer summoned backup units, after which the man complied.  Diamond O. Melton, 17, of the 2100 block of Harvey, was arrested and charged with resisting a peace officer and reckless conduct.
