Berwyn Police Blotter

Masked armed robbers flee on foot

June 27, 2008, 5:42 AM
A caller reported an armed robbery in progress in front of “12th St. Rag” tavern, 69443 Roosevelt.  Two masked men in dark clothing were seen struggling with a third man.  One witness tried to chase the offenders in his van when they fled on foot.

Police spoke with the victim, a 49-year-old Berwyn man who had come to the bar at 5 AM to clean it.  The victim said he unlocked the doors and turned on the TV.  At 5:40 AM, when the victim went outside to throw trash in the dumpster, a masked man grabbed him and pulled him to the ground. The victim’s elbows and knees were injured in the process.  A second masked man appeared, implied he had a weapon, and joined the first man in the struggle with the victim.  Moments later, the offenders ran away headed west, then south.  The dazed victim ran north across Roosevelt, yelling for help, which drew the attention of the witness in the van.

The victim described the offenders as two males dressed in black, wearing full-face ski masks.  Another witness told police he was on his way to work when he saw the two assailants; he said the masks were dark stockings pulled over the faces and heads of the offenders.

A woman witness said she heard yelling and saw a man dressed in black running southbound through her yard.  She told police the suspect had brown hair, and said she could identify him.
