In race with Mercedes, Beetle wins tickets, gets impounded

May 13, 2008, 8:14 AM
An officer monitoring eastbound traffic at 22nd and Kenilworth noticed two cars speeding 51 MPH in a 25 MPH zone, side by side:  they were a blue Volkswagen Beetle and a silver Mercedes.  The VW passed the finish line first and was pulled over; the Mercedes got away.  VW driver Mark H. Cornell, 46, of the 4500 block of south Ellis Ave., Chicago, showed an Illinois driver’s license that proved to be invalid.  He also had a Vermont license, which had been suspended.  The Beetle was impounded for the latter offense. Cornell was charged with speeding and driving despite a license suspension.
