Habitual revoked-license driving results in felony charges

June 26, 2008, 12:50 AM
In the 6800 block of Ogden, an officer had to swerve to avoid a collisions with a Nissan Maxima coming at him in the wrong lane of traffic.  The officer made a U-turn and activated lights and siren to chase the offender, curbing the Nissan in the 3500 block of Grove. The driver initially told police he was “Jorge Alberto”, with a 1984 birth date, but there was no record on file of such a driver. The man, whose breath smelled of alcohol, said he was coming from 26th and Paulina and would not answer when police asked for his address.  The driver was arrested for suspected DUI.  A search of his person revealed a Mexican ID and a Social Security card.  When the driver’s prints were run through the computer, he was positively identified as Jorge Antonio Aleman-Barrera, 25, of the 1400 block of Clarence, and with a different birth date than he initially stated.  His license had been revoked for DUI.  The Assistant State’s Attorney on duty approved three felony counts:  aggravated DUI on a revoked license; aggravated DUI on a license revoked for DUI; and aggravated DUI on a revoked license, for the third time.  Barrera was also charged with improper lane use, no seat belt, no turn signal when required, no insurance, and driving despite his license revocation.
