Witnesses to an accident at 31st and Grove heard a crash, then saw a white Pontiac Grand Prix flee the scene. Next, a citizen called to report a suspicious vehicle in the 3100 block of Wesley; police found it was a white Grand Prix with extensive front-end damage, in the middle of the street. The car had a flat tire and its lights were off. The driver smelled of alcohol and looked intoxicated to police; he refused to perform field sobriety tests. Police said the driver was insulting towards them and refused requests given during the search of his person and inventory of his property. Victor M. Avila, 33, of Glen Ellyn chatted with an officer, saying “now it’s getting warm out, it will be getting crazy with people shooting;” he went on to state that he grew up in Chicago around 30th and Harding, describing the area as gang-infested. Avila said he had been headed for a relative’s home in the 3000 block of East when “all this sh*t happened.” Avila was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, improper lane use and no insurance.
