Gangbanger’s serendipitous appearance draws cop’s attention to alley peace-breachers
September 6, 2007, 2:55 PM
A police sergeant checking Lincoln Middle School—6432 West 16th—prior to dismissal, recognized a tattooed man, known to him as a street gang member, standing in front of Ace of Fades barbershop, 6413 16th ( http://www.aceoffades.com )
As the officer drove past the place, he saw a baseball fly out of the alley behind the shop and hit a vehicle traveling east on 16th. The ball bounced off the first car and hit the police officer’s car, striking the driver side door. The gangbanger fled the scene.
The sergeant pulled into the alley behind the barbershop, where he found two men, both employed by Ace of Fades. Both men were frisked. The search of one man, 25-year-old Adam Hadjis of the 200 block of north LeClaire, Chicago, recovered both a bag of marijuana and an 8-inch-long black switchblade knife with a 3 and 3/8 inch blade—a weapon illegal to possess or carry in Illinois.
The second man, Camillo Anaya, 18, of Downers Grove, was charged with disorderly conduct. Police described barbershop owner Rafael Pellot, 40, as “uncooperative”; they said he has been warned repeatedly about similar activity. This time, he received a citation for use of the premises to disturb the peace.
The misdemeanor court date for Hadjis is Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 9 AM in courtroom 101, 1500 Maybrook Dr, Maywood.
Anaya and Pellot have a local ordinance court date of Thursday, Sept. 20, at 3 PM in the community room of the police station, 6401 W. 31st, Berwyn.
Just for the record......everyone knows there is always two sides to the story.
first of all, I am not a “gangbanger”, and if you ask me, Berwyn PD needs to work on their profiling skills. Secondly, unless they are issuing see-thru goggles to all Sergeants, all of the ink on my body was hiddin by the short sleeve T-shirt I was wearing. Which would have made it impossible to tell if I had any tatoos.Yes I did have a “SPRING LOADED” Government Issued Benchmate knife in my possesion. (spring loaded means it can only “OPEN” by the press of a button, disqualifing the catagory of a “SWITCH BLADE” (I DID NOT HAVE THE “SWITCH BLADE” PICTURE POSTED ON THE ORIGINAL REPORT).
I also explaind to the arresting officer that the knife was in my possion prior to being searched.
Yes I did have a .5g bag of marijuana in my possesion. If it wasnt for the Turn Key on duty in Processing at Berwyn PD finding the bag, the arresting officers would have missed it entirely.
the point Im trying to make is this.....
I am an Iraqi veteran, who was Honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps. I am the last person the BPD needs to be catagorizing as a “gangbanger” or a threat to society. My reputation is important to me, and I refuse to let this tarnish my name. If anyone has any further questions please feel free to visit me at Ace of Fades barber shop anytime. I agree that weapons should be taken off the streets to keep them safe, but not in the form of Harassment.Posted by on 04/09 at 08:36 PMThe story clearly states the tattooed known gang member who initially attracted the sergeant’s attention was already gone before the other two were approached and arrested.
