Berwyn Police Blotter

Gangbangers accused in beating go free when victim won’t sign complaints

June 22, 2007, 12:53 PM
A woman in the 1600 block of Scoville called police when she saw two men beating someone, while a third man stood over the victim.  She yelled for the attackers to get off the victim, and they fled in a maroon Saturn.  The victim, a resident of the 6400 block of 16th, had visible injuries to his face, arm and shoulder.  He told police he used to belong to a street gang, but left several months ago. He said he left the neighborhood for five of those months to avoid encounters with his ex-homies.  Since his return, he said, he had been afraid this would happen. He said two men punched him and threw him against a fence, and the third pulled a black semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the victim.  The gun-holder reportedly said, “yeah, bitch, we got you now.”
Police gave descriptions of the Saturn and the suspects to other law-enforcement bodies and soon learned the men had been stopped by Cook County sheriff’s deputies.  The suspects were a 17-year-old Berwyn male from the 3400 block of Euclid; a 24-year-old Burbank man; and a 23-year-old man from the 2400 block of north Tripp, Chicago.  When questioned by a Berwyn detective, the man accused of holding the gun laughed and denied it.
The victim maintained he was willing to sign complaints against the three men, but several hours later decided against it, so they were freed.
