Fraudulent credit card use after purse, wallets stolen from teachers during school day

January 30, 2008, 8:34 AM
Two teachers at Havlicek elementary school, 6401 15th, reported thefts to police.  The first teacher said her purse was stolen between 1 and 3 PM the previous day.  It contained a wallet with a debit card, two credit cards, car keys and about $300 cash.  At 7:40 PM, the teacher told police her debit card had been used at grocery stores three times already:  one charge was for $40, once for $196.52, and once for $241.84.
A second teacher said her wallet was stolen out of her purse; the wallet held three store credit cards, a MasterCard, a checkbook, etc.  She was unaware of the theft until MasterCard’s fraud division phoned her to report suspicious activity on the card; someone used it to charge $179 worth of items at a Target store in Chicago.
