Berwyn Police Blotter

Elderly owner bitten by aggressive pet

December 14, 2007, 3:14 PM
Police sent to the 2800 block of Harvey about a dog bite found a mixed-breed male dog on the front steps of a house, next to a pool of blood.  An 87-year-old woman, a resident of the 2700 block of Harvey, was following her own at-large dog, and asked a woman from the 2800 block whether she had a leash.  The woman did not, but provided the dog owner with two shoelaces tied together.  As the owner tied the laces to the dog, the dog bit her in the right hand.  Both women then went inside the house, leaving the dog unsecured and unattended on the porch as they called 911.  The dog, “King”, growled, snapped and bared its teeth at responding officers, who finally secured it with a dog-catching noose.  The owner told police “King” is four years old and has escaped his yard “a few times”.  But neighbors said the dog is frequently unleashed and aggressive.  Police checked the dog owner’s yard and found the fencing was completely inadequate to contain the animal, who could easily escape.  The owner was cited for having a dog at large and having a dog at large displaying aggressive behavior.  She was unable to sign these citations because of her injury:  the 3” by 2” bite wound the dog inflicted on her right hand.
