Berwyn Police Blotter
DUI accident
June 14, 2008, 6:54 PM
Police in the 2100 block of Oak Park saw a blue Mercury Grand Marquis speed southbound and strike the side of a red van, flipping the van completely around. The Mercury ended up on the sidewalk in front of Murray’s auto parts store. When officers approached the accident scene, an intoxicated-looking man stood beside the Mercury. Robert D. Ross, 22, of the 6300 block of 32nd, told police he had not been driving; he reportedly said his girlfriend, who was standing nearby, was the driver. Police noticed the woman giving Ross nasty looks as he said this. Police took Ross, the woman and their crying baby to MacNeal Hospital. At the hospital, police spoke to the woman alone, noting that she had a bruise made by a seatbelt that could only have been made by the passenger-side belt. When this was pointed out to the woman, police said, she began to cry and admitted the man was the driver. Ross, too, admitted to driving. His blood alcohol level was .174, more than twice the legal limit. He was charged with driving too fast for conditions, DUI, DUI of .174, no insurance and damage to city property.
The driver of the van, a Cicero resident, was extricated from the van and transported to Loyola hospital. He was later charged for driving on a suspended license and without insurance.
