Drivers passing schools ignore stop signs, crossing guards

September 29, 2008, going-to-school time
An officer in the 7000 block of west 16th saw a black Pontiac Grand Am pass a school bus, although the bus had its stop sign extended, red lights flashing, and was in the process of unloading children at Jefferson elementary school.  Driver Claudia C. Fausto, 35, of 2312 south St. Louis, Chicago, told police she had no license.  In fact, she had a license, but it was suspended.  The car was impounded; Fausto was charged with passing a school bus* --itself an offense that results in license suspension—and driving on a suspended license.

At Elmwood and 16th, during dismissal time for Lincoln middle school, an officer saw a Suzuki SUV driver around a crossing guard who stood in the intersection, holding a clearly visible stop sign.  Jorge M. Tellez, 40, of Cicero, was charged with driving unlicensed and disobeying a crossing guard.
