July 25, 2008, 5:40 AM
Police were dispatched to a street disturbance in the 1900 block of Kenilworth. The complainant, a block resident, said he was getting into a car with his girlfriend when a man in a Cubs T-shirt began swinging what appeared to be a pipe at them. The offender fled on foot, but was stopped at 21st and Elmwood, where the victim positively identified him. He was Jeffrey M. Benes, 31, of the 2300 block of Ridgeland. According to the victim, Benes announced, “I’m an [insert gang nickname here] m^#&@*f^@&*%!”, then swung the “pipe”, which missed the victim. Police recovered the weapon, which proved to be a broom handle. Benes was charged with aggravated assault.
