Armed man robs, pistol-whips Brookfield resident

Another gun-related incident, this time in the alley behind the 1400 block of Lombard.  A 41-year-old Brookfield man told police he was in the driver’s seat of his Ford pickup truck, parked there with a friend in the passenger seat, when a man appeared “out of nowhere”, opened the driver’s door and stuck a small chrome gun to his left cheek.  The robber demanded the victims’ keys, cell phones and wallets.  When the driver told the robber, “Hold on a minute,” the offender struck him upside the head with the butt of the gun.  Both victims gave up the requested items.  The robber then fled on foot southbound through the alley. 

The victims said the robber was a male black in his 30s, 5’9”, 235 lbs, dressed in a bright orange shirt, striped shorts and a dark baseball cap.

A man told police he was jumped by two men in the gangway of his apartment building in the 1900 block of Grove. The two assailants ordered him to lie down on the ground and pointed what he believed was a plastic BB gun at his head.  The gunman said, “don’t give me any s%^&” and asked, “what’s in the backpack?” The victim said his backpack contained nothing but medication and clothes, but he later told police it also had two Nikon cameras worth $600.

Someone broke into a parked Escalade in the 1900 block of Elmwood and destroyed the dashboard while extracting the car radio.

The following drivers had vehicles impounded for car stereos audible more than 75 feet away. Arrests occurred along Cermak between Lombard and Oak Park Ave. Violators were fined $500: Juvenal C. Carrillo, 36, of Chicago; Enrique Saucedo, 20, Cicero; Miguel Patlan, 26, Cicero; Erica Sanchez, 24, Cicero; Carlos Rodriguez, 23, Cicero; Fahmi Hilal, 19, Cicero; Pedro Samano, 31, 1200 block of Scoville, Raul Rosale, 40, Cicero; Jorge Rodriguez, 19, Chicago.

Rock through window

A 71-year-old woman heard a crash and found a rock in her kitchen sink in the 1600 block of Clarence. The projectile damaged the window and storm window.

Car reported stolen

A man reported his mother’s white 2005 Toyota Corolla was stolen from a parking spot in the 6300 block of 14th St.

A clerk at a convenience store in the 2600 block of Ridgeland told police she was robbed by a male assailant wearing a blue face mask. The man removed a silver revolver from the waistband beneath his sweatshirt and demanded, “give me all the money.” The clerk told police she was nervous and had a hard time opening the register, at which point the man menaced her and demanded, “give me the big money.” She handed over approximately $115 and the assailant demanded that she lift up the cash drawer to reveal any other cash. None was present. The assailant left, with the cash drawer. A witness gave police a description and they picked up a suspect a couple of blocks away. When she viewed a lineup, the witness told cops,” That’s him! I recognize those pants! There’s a big B on them.” Charges are pending.

Persons unknown broke the windshield of a black Jeep Cherokee parked in the 1800 block of Cuyler. The car was “keyed” along its length and vandalized with black spray paint on headlights and windows.

Pregnant woman’s purse snatched

A 30-year-old woman, eight months pregnant, told police she was parked in Cermak Plaza in front of the dollar store and was loading her minivan when a man reached into the van, grabbed her purse and made off with it, accompanied by a second man; the two fled on foot eastbound.  The man’s face was obscured by the hood of his sweatshirt, but the victim described him as a male white, 45-50, 5’10”, medium build, in jeans and a brown hoodie. The other man, she said, was a thin male black, 60-65, 6’ tall, dressed in all black.  The victim’s purse contained a passport and a LINK card; she was not injured.

Ogden Avenue liquor store robbed at gunpoint

The owner of Route 66 Liquors, 6845 Ogden, called police to report he was robbed at gunpoint.  The victim, a 51-year-old Addison man, told police two men entered the store; one displayed a small black semi-automatic handgun and said, “Don’t do anything.  Just open the register.” The second robber grabbed $1,000 from the drawer, demanded the victim open the lottery register, and removed $355 from that drawer.  Finally, the robbers made the victim empty his pockets; they took his driver’s license, credit cards and $150 before fleeing the store.  The victim said the gunman was a male black in his late 20s, 5’6"-5’8", with longer hair, wearing a black White Sox baseball cap, a black hoodie, dark blue jeans and black gym shoes with white piping.  The second robber, the victim stated, was also a male black, dressed much like the first offender.

Pale robber

A woman told police she was robbed while sitting in her car in the White Castle parking lot at Ogden and Harlem.  She said a man approached her and asked her to give him $4.75; as he did so, she said, he made a threatening gesture with a piece of wire.  The victim, fearing for her safety, handed him a $5 bill.  She described the offender as a male white, 55 and pale, dressed in a baseball cap, red shirt, white shorts and white shoes.

Robbers accost woman

A 59-year-old woman was robbed at Home and Vacin on her way home from Cermak Plaza.  The victim said her purse was snatched; the purse contained ID, a credit card and jewelry.  The first robber was described as a male black, about 17, 5’5” and thin, clean-shaven and wearing a white baseball cap.  The second robber, the victim said, was a male black dressed in a black coat and talking on a cell phone during the incident.

A woman handed over a BB gun to police; she found the gun on the corner of 27th and Harvey at 6:30 in the morning.

The following drivers were fined for having car stereo speakers audible from over 75 feet away:

Alfredo Reyna, 19, of Cicero; Blanca Moran, 1800 block of Maple; Antonio V. Welton, 1500 block of Oak Park; Rigoberto Ramirez, 20, of Berwyn; Carlos A Renteria, 21, of Chicago; Sergio Dominguez, 22, of the 2200 block of Wisconsin, and Christopher Veruzco, 18, of Worth. All were charged with local noise ordinance violations, had their cars impounded and were fined.

Two dumpsters were found engulfed in flames in the 2100 and 1900 blocks of Grove.

Apartment fire

Berwyn and North Riverside fire departments responded to an apartment fire in the 1900 block of Euclid. A man and his son were taken to Loyola emergency room in Maywood with smoke inhalation.  Arson inspectors were investigating whether the previous dumpster fires were related.

Illicit drugs roundup

Police charged Abraham Nevarez, 24, of Cicero, with possessing less than 5 grams of cannabis in his shoe.  Aurelio Robles, 30, of Cicero, was charged with possession of less than 5 grams of marijuana and 2.4 grams of cocaine. Lazarrek T. Ellis, 22, of Oak Park, was charged with possession of less than 2.5 grams of pot.

A man told police that as he passed the Shell station on Roosevelt and Ridgeland, he was beaten with a blunt object on the back of his head by two men in hoodies. Stolen were a cell phone, a gold necklace, house keys and 70 bucks.

A girl in a car waiting for her mother saw a man walking listlessly through the parking lot on the Dunkin Donuts at Cermak and East. When the girl’s mother exited the store and opened the car door, the man said, “excuse me,” and grabbed her gold necklace.

Car alarm stops vehicle theft

A man in the 2100 block of Gunderson heard his parked light blue Buick Regal Allure’s alarm go off and observed two men inside his car. The men said, “Let’s go, he’s coming!” and fled in a red Chrysler Pacifica. The Buick’s steering column had been peeled and some fuses pulled “in an attempt to shut the alarm off.”

Police charged Marcus Stevenson, 45, of Hazel Crest, with battery, after he allegedly punched and kicked a MacNeal Hospital co-worker at the BP Station in the 3800 block of Harlem, while the co-worker was gassing his car .

Gas station cashier, unclear on concept , gives car keys to thief

A 78-year-old woman told police that her deceased son’s white 1994 Dodge Caravan had been stolen from a Citgo parking lot in the 2400 block of Harlem. The van had been parked in the lot with a “For Sale” sign. The woman told police she left keys with the gas station owner, “in the event of an inquiry.” The cashier told police that a customer she knew “only by sight” requested the keys, drove the van away and never returned. The car’s owner told police the cashier was “supposed to take their driver’s license before giving them the keys.” The van turned up in Bolingbrook:  engine burned out, back bumper damaged and radio missing.

A maintenance man told police that someone broke into the Cuyler Pool in the 1900 block of Cuyler and opened a can of blue paint—used to paint the bottom of the pool --then spread it randomly on the floor, walls, stalls and lockers of the locker room.


YOU’RE not my honey!

A woman mistook a male figure—visible in her home surveillance screen at the door of her garage—for her husband, and went to the back door to greet him.  When she got to the door, she realized did not recognize the man clutching one of her bikes, and yelled at him to drop it. The stranger—described by the victim as a male Hispanic in a blue hat, white polo and jeans, fled the scene. A red bicycle was missing from garage.

Armed robber fails to hide from cameras

A convenience store clerk told the police he was robbed at gunpoint by a man brandishing a black revolver in the 6600 block of 16th St. The robber demanded the $5 and $1 bills from the till, got $50 from the safe, then demanded the victim’s wallet, which contained $40. He also stole a carton of Newport cigarettes. The clerk told police that “the offender was kneeling behind the counter during the time he was there in an attempt to avoid the cameras or avoid anyone outside seeing him.” It was done in vain, however; surveillance cameras clearly captured the 5’6“ bald black male, with a black and white floral bandana over his nose and mouth, wearing a leather jacket.

Serrated kitchen knife used by couple to rob woman

A 27-year-old Chicago woman told police she was robbed while walking to a gas station from a friend’s place.  The victim said she saw a man and a woman out walking at 21st and Oak Park as she approached the gas station; when she reached the north Cermak alley at Euclid, the man grabbed her from behind and choked her while his female companion went through the victim’s pockets.  The man put a serrated kitchen knife to the victim’s throat and said “Give use your money”, while the woman removed $60 from the victim’s pocket.  The man then threw the victim to the ground and the offenders fled the scene.  The victim described the offenders as follows:  a male black, 25-30, 5’10” - 6 feet tall, thin, in a blue jacket, grey hoodie and blue jeans; and a female black, 25-30, thin, dark-skinned, dresed in a black jacket, black pants and black shoes.

The clerk at a gas station in the 6700 block of Cermak reported being robbed at gunpoint.  The victim described the offender as a male black, about 30 years old, 5’10”, medium build, wearing a black leather hat and a black leather coat.  The offender, who was on his cell phone during the incident, approached the counter and requested a pack of Newport cigarettes, then displayed a black handgun and demanded cash.  The clerk handed over approximately $600 from the register.  The robber fled the scene westbound on Riverside Drive in a white vehicle.

Teamwork

A 21-year-old man told police, via a translator, that he was jumped and robbed at 16th and Euclid.  The victim said he was walking down 16th on the south side of the street with a black four-door vehicle with tinted windows pulled up beside him.  Three men wearing black ski masks jumped out and grabbed him; one held him at knifepoint while the others restrained him by the arms and went through his pockets.  One of the assailants, the victim said, hit the back of his neck, causing him to fall to the ground.  The robbers got away with the victim’s wallet, which, he said, contained his Mexican ID and $300 cash.

Outgrappled

A man called police to report he found two plastic bags, containing female clothing, on the curb in the 7000 block of Roosevelt.  Also found were black shoes, black wrestler’s hadgear and a Morton West high school ID card.  Police contacted the 15-year-old girl on the ID card and paid a call at her house.  The girl told them the found items were hers, taken from her by force as he walked home from a wrestling meet.  The victim said she had reached Cermak and Cuyler when she heard running and laughter behind her, felt herself shoved from behind, and heard someone say “let go of the sh!t!”.  Someone knocked her down, took her bag and stole her cell phone.  The victim described the attackers as two female blacks and one male black, all of whom fled westbound in a small vehicle.

Bus stop battery

A 38-year-old Cicero woman told police she was waiting for a bus at Harlem and 18th whn she was attacked by three women wearing fur-trimmed hooded parkas.  The victim said the attackers punched her in the head and body, tore away her backpack and fled eastward.  The backpack contained $60 cash, two rings, a debit card and a Guatemalan driver’s license.  The victim described the attackers as three female blacks, all around 6 feet tall and 170-180 lbs.

Day’s receipts don’t quite make it to the bank

A 25-year-old woman told police she had just closed the dollar store in Cermak Plaza and attempted to deposit the day’s cash intake at the bank when she was accosted by an armed robber.  The woman reported she drove to Fifth Third bank, followed by a female coworker, with the nightly cash drop—totalling $3,500—inside a clear plastic bag.  As she approached the bank’s business drop box, she said, a masked man ran around the corner of the building carrying what appeared to be a black rifle.  The woman said that when she saw the man, she threw the bag of cash into the bushes, ran in front of her coworker’s car and yelled “Leave! Get out of here!” then tried to enter her own car.  She then tried to enter her own car, she said, but before she could shut the door, the man pointed the gun in her face and demanded the money.  The woman said she told him she threw it; she watched as the man checked the bushes and grabbed the money bag, then fled westward.  The woman described the robber as a male black, 5"11- 6 feet tall, wearing a ski mask, jeans and a black jacket with a red and white design on the sleeve.

Armed robbery attempt at 15th and Oak Park

A 23-year-old Addison man told police he was approaching his silver Mercedes SUV, parked at 15th and Oak Park, when a masked man came up to him, displayed a gun and said “give me the car keys”.  The victim said he struck at the robber and tried to run to safety.  As the victim crossed 15th, a light-color van tried to strike him.  The robber entered the van, which fled the scene.  The victim described the robber as a male black, 20-25 years old, over 6 ft. tall about 170 lbs, wearing dark clothing and a mask; the driver and passenger in the getaway van were described as similar in appearance and clothing.
