Fear prevented tenants from reporting gang entry to and defacement of empty flat

June 28, 2008, 3:17 PM
The owner of an apartment building in the 2200 block of Gunderson told police a basement flat, empty for several weeks, was found damaged after someone apparently entered via an open window.  The landlord reportedly found gang graffiti, some in Spanish, done in marker, pen, crayon and silver spray paint.  A hole was punched in a wall, also.  The building’s other tenants, the landlord said, were afraid to call police.

Woman says kidnappers dumped her

June 25, 2008, 2:56 AM
Police met a woman caller at 16th and Elmwood; the 20-year-old woman said she was dumped there after being kidnapped in Chicago by two men in a green van.  The alleged victim told police she was walking to a store near the 100 block of north Pine in Chicago, on her way to purchase some baby formula, when two men pulled her into a green van.  She said the men tried to pull her clothes off and rape her, but she fought them off.  The woman said the offenders pushed her back out of the van at 16th and Gunderson with her shirt half off and her pants below her knees.  Berwyn police noted the woman did not appear upset, and looked neat, clean and uninjured; they contacted police in Chicago’s 15th district, since the reported crime occurred there.

“I don’t have nothing on me, smurf”

June 22, 2008, 1:27 AM
An officer saw a man yelling and screaming while standing in the middle of the street in front of Selena’s bar on 26th at Cuyler.  The man appeared to be yelling at the bar’s bouncers; he reportedly shouted, “I will f@#& your fat a$$ up!” Police stopped the man, who was shirtless, as he was walking to his white Chevy Suburban.  The man appeared intoxicated and aggressive.  The bouncers told police the man tried to pick a fight in the bar, but was escorted outside.

The officer could see a white plastic baggie hanging from the man’s beltline on his right.  The officer asked the man to place his hands on the squad car, but during the subsequent patdown, the man kept removing his hands from the car.  When asked whether he had any weapons, police said, the man stuttered and hesitated before saying “No, I don’t have nothing on me, smurf.” The officer recovered the baggie, upon which the man said “yeah, you found some s&!t on me, but that ain’t mine.” He then lunged and attempted to run off.  In the subsequent struggle, the man was taken to the ground and secured by police.  He sustained a cut near one eye during the process, and tried to run off once more while police awaited the ambulance; he was again subdued.

As police spoke to the offender, 32-year-old Silvestre Alvarez of the 2600 block of Kenilworth, the car alarm on Alvarez’s Suburban—parked in a handicap spot in the 2500 block of Cuyler— began to go off.  It was towed; Alvarez received tickets for parking in the handicap spot and a noise ticket for the alarm.

The substance in the baggie tested positive for 2 grams of cocaine. The assistant state’s attorney approved a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance; Alvarez was also charged with resisting an officer.

Lalalalala, I can’t hear you ….

June 20, 2008, 7:49 PM
A woman walked into the police station to make a complaint about her older sister. The 28-year-old Lyons woman told police she and her 32-year-old sister, a Chicago resident, were looking at a house for sale near 35th and Clinton when they started to argue.  The younger woman said she did not want to listen to her sister, so she plugged her ears with both hands.  At this, she said, the older sister whacked her in the head.  The woman said she did not want her arrested, but only wanted to report the incident.

Battery by brick

June 15, 2008, 4:51 AM
Police came to the 3100 block of Euclid on calls of a fight in progress.  They found a 19-year-old Cicero woman crying and bleeding from both hands; she told them three men threw bricks at her.  She said the three offenders came to fight with her boyfriend, and positively identified 22-year-old James Delgallo, of the 3700 block of Gunderson; Remberto Beltran, 21, of Romeoville, and Sergio Rivera, 17, of Broadview.  Each was charged with battery.

The woman told police she and her boyfriend were drinking at his place in the 3100 block of Oak Park when three men, known to them as gang members, banged on the door and demanded the man come out, upon which bricks flew.  According to the report, at the time of the arrest Delgallo was out on bond from a drug arrest made on May 6 of this year by Berwyn police.

June 14, 2008, 8:31 PM
Police were dispatched to the 3400 block of Clinton after a 45-foot-long portion of a tree fell, blocking the street completely.  Berwyn fire personnel tried to cut up the tree, but it was too big and damaged their chainsaw.  A tow truck was summoned to push the tree onto the parkway.

The man who called about the tree told police that he and his wife had called city hall last summer because the tree was rotted, but nothing was ever done about it.

Burglary investigation leads cops to baby left all alone in apartment

June 12, 2008, 4:54 AM
A caller told police a man tried to enter a basement window in the 1600 block of Wesley.  Police found no burglar, but did see a damaged window.  The landlady told police she had seen a man in a red and white shirt yelling “LYNN! LYNN”; then she heard breaking glass and saw the man heading north on the sidewalk. She let police into the basement apartment.  No adults were present, but an 18-month-old baby was alone in a crib.  DCFS took custody of the baby boy, who was not injured but wore a soiled diaper.

12:40 PM
Nearly eight hours later, police located the baby’s mother at 31st and Austin in Cicero.  Police told the 26-year-old woman what had happened, and asked why she left her baby alone.  The woman said her ex-boyfriend was trying to break in, so she fled and left the baby behind.  When asked where she went for the next nearly eight hours, the woman reportedly said, “Just on the street, staying away from [the ex]”. At no time, police said, did the woman call 911 or contact anyone for help.  Police received no inquiries about the baby from 5 AM to 12:40 PM, and not once during the interview with the mother did she ask how or where her baby was.  She was charged with endangering the life of a child.
