Serrated kitchen knife used by couple to rob woman

A 27-year-old Chicago woman told police she was robbed while walking to a gas station from a friend’s place.  The victim said she saw a man and a woman out walking at 21st and Oak Park as she approached the gas station; when she reached the north Cermak alley at Euclid, the man grabbed her from behind and choked her while his female companion went through the victim’s pockets.  The man put a serrated kitchen knife to the victim’s throat and said “Give use your money”, while the woman removed $60 from the victim’s pocket.  The man then threw the victim to the ground and the offenders fled the scene.  The victim described the offenders as follows:  a male black, 25-30, 5’10” - 6 feet tall, thin, in a blue jacket, grey hoodie and blue jeans; and a female black, 25-30, thin, dark-skinned, dresed in a black jacket, black pants and black shoes.

Crossing guard struck by car

A crossing guard told police that, while at his post at Riverside and Kenilworth during school dismissal time, he noticed a dark-green older Infiniti sedan recklessly pass several other vehicles on the right.  The Infiniti then struck the guard before fleeing the scene.  The victim noted the license number of the offender’s car; it was registered to a man in the 7000 block of 16th St.

Biohazardous fly-dumping*

A man reported his discovery, in the 6300 block of 26th, four red plastic containers labeled “BIOHAZARD”, adjacent to a dumpster in the alley.  The containers appeared to be full of needles and other medical waste.  Paramedics disposed of the items properly.

The gang that threw like girls

A man in the 1500 block of Oak Park reported someone threw a brick at a second-story window of his house; the brick, however, bounced harmlessly off the window, causing no damage.  The victim reported the feebly-flung-brick incident followed yelling by two persons in black hoodies and blue jeans; the yelling consisted of slogans dissing one street gang and declaring allegiance to a locally-active one known by a two-digit moniker and a penchant for graffiti on sundry items of other people’s property.

A box of Newports and all the cash in the drawer, please

The clerk at a gas station in the 6700 block of Cermak reported being robbed at gunpoint.  The victim described the offender as a male black, about 30 years old, 5’10”, medium build, wearing a black leather hat and a black leather coat.  The offender, who was on his cell phone during the incident, approached the counter and requested a pack of Newport cigarettes, then displayed a black handgun and demanded cash.  The clerk handed over approximately $600 from the register.  The robber fled the scene westbound on Riverside Drive in a white vehicle.

Police scoop fugitive out of Escalade

Police stopped a white Cadillac Escalade at cermak and Elmwood because the vehicle matched the description of on involved in an attempted residentail burglary in the 1900 block of Grove.  During the investigational traffic stop, a check against state records of one passenger’s name turned up an active arrest warrant out of Cook County.  Jose M. Correa, 32, of the 7000 block of west 41st, Stickney, was arrested and processed for the warrant.

Graffiti was left on a garbage can in the 1400 block of Wisconsin, as well as on a trailer parked in the 1300 block of Highland.

Someone broke a basement window and a dryer vent on the side of a house in the 2500 block of Grove.

An overhead garage door in the 1600 block of Oak Park was marred with graffiti.  More graffiti was left on properties in the 1400 block of Highland and the 6300 block of 15th.

Horrifyingly dry dead Christmas tree signals mental deterioration

A 24-year-old woman in the 1600 block of Oak Park repeatedly called 911 claiming her landlord was stalking her and lying in wait to rape her. After warning the woman to cease the phone calls, police advised that she receive a physical and psychological evaluation. They noted a large, dead Christmas tree was still present in the apartment, complete with lights. The woman was told the tree was a fire hazard and had long ago died; needles littered the floor. Furthermore, there were smokers in the home.  She was advised by the fire department not to turn on the lights. and to remove the tree immediately. During this incident, the landlord in question was at the Berwyn Police Department asking for an order of protection against the tenant and her mother, both of whom he was trying to evict.

A man replacing the fuel pump on a Chevy Tahoe SUV in the 2700 block of Highland spilled gasoline on the garage floor, which was ignited by a nearby propane space heater. Fire crews put out the fire and boarded up the garage.

Get me back my jewelry

A Cicero man reported an incident he said occurred on February 13 at Bootlegs bar, 2717 Ridgeland.  He said a man known to him only as “Tattoo Pete” approached him in the bar and accused him of having an affair with his wife.  The victim said the offender slashed his tires and threw a beer bottle at him; he also stated the offender fought with him, pulled a knife, and yanked off the victim’s gold chain. 

Asked why he waited so long to report the incident, the victim said he had wanted the bar owner to “handle” the situation, but now he wants the return of his gold chain, which featured a 2-inch long Jesus pendant.

Disheveled at the beauty shop

Answering a disturbance call, an officer came to a hair salon in the 6300 block of Cermak, where he found two middle-aged women struggling in the doorway.  After separating the combatants, police learned that one woman, a Chicago resident, was the owner of the salon; the other, a Cicero resident, was her employee.  The women had been arguing over some type of financial issue, and the disagreement escalated into a physical altercation.  Both women exhibited scratches on their arms; their clothing was mussed and their hair disheveled.  The employee was allowed to collect her belongings; she returned her key and left the scene.

Up on blocks

A caller reported a red Acura in the 2400 block of Lombard/Harvey alley was missing its wheels.  Police found the vehicle up on blocks.  The radio and shift knob were gone, and lugnuts lay on the ground next to the wheel-less car.

I know how to beat DUIs

An officer stopped a dark green Passat in the 1300 block of Harvey after seeing the car drift and nearly strike parked vehicles.  The driver,Jose M. Avalos, 37, of 1422 Harvey, told the officer he was on his way home, even though his car had already passed his address by the time it was pulled over.  The officer reported Avalos smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes; Avalos reportedly stated he had consumed “two beers”.  Avalos failed multiple field sobriety tests, after which he refused further testing, stating he “knows how to beat DUIs and has a good lawyer”.  Avalos then announced he no longer understood English—the language in which he had functioned without difficulty up until that point in the incident—and stated he needed a Spanish translator.  An officer was summoned to translate for him.  According to the report, Avalos was “very rude” to her, stated he did not understand the Warning to Motorists, and, in Spanish, referred to her as “stupid”.  Avalos was charged with improper lane use and DUI.

Drug search warrant executed in Lyons

On February 21 at 12:41 AM, a judge signed a Cook County search warrant for the person and apartment of Ronald P. Larson, 55, of 8157 Ogden in Lyons.  Berwyn tactical officers knocked at that address and received no answer; fearing the destruction of evidence, they broke the door in and found Larson at a table on which lay white powder cocaine, a straw, and a razor blade.  K-9 Officer Ares sniffed throughout the apartment, and police recovered a large amount of cannabis, some cocaine, a digital scale, two guns and a large amount of ammunition.  Larson had no firearm owner’s ID.  He was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis, possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, and possession of firearms and ammunition without a FOID card.

Candy grab

The manager of Walgreen’s in Cermak plaza detained a woman after she was reportedly seen concealing candy in her purse.  Police recovered 21 candy items from the woman.  The manager told officers that the woman had been caught on previous occasions doing the same thing at the store, and that she was no longer welcome there.  Micaela Mercado, 21, was charged with retail theft.
