Manager gets offender to leave his real name, address, after failed try with stolen credit card

November 23, 2008, 12:44 AM
The manager of Blockbuster Video, 6601 Roosevelt, told police three men tried to buy a PlayStation with stolen credit cards. The credit cards did not match any of the men’s names.  The offenders, described as three male blacks, told the manager the cards belonged to his dad.  The name on the cards was that of a 63-year-old male white, an Oak Park resident and owner of a large business in Berwyn. The manager told the offenders the cards could not be used, but was able to persuade one man to use his Illinois driver’s license to apply for a Blockbuster account.  The license information showed the offender to be a 20-year-old man from the 8200 block of north Kilpatrick in Skokie.

Police notified the owner of the credit cards; he said he went to the movies in Oak Park late the previous night and noticed his wallet missing afterward.

Armed robber accosts three Chicagoans in plaza parking lot

November 22, 2008, 10:33 PM
Two young Chicago men, ages 18 and 17, accompanied by a 16-year-old Chicago female, told police they were walking through Cermak Plaza when a black Pontiac Grand Prix, partial Illinois plate “X34”, approached.  Three men were in the car. One got out and asked the victims for a lighter.  The victims said they didn’t have one and walked away.  The stranger yelled for the victims to come back.  Apparently they did; the stranger pulled a black semi-automatic handgun out of his pants and said, “What you all got?” A second offender got out of the Pontiac and patted the victims down, relieving them of two cell phones, an MP3 player, a T-shirt, a new pair of Nikes and $7.  The robbers fled in the Pontiac.  The victims described the offenders as three male Hispanics, all dressed in black hoodies and black pants. The gunman reportedly wore a black skullcap and a black mask.

Incompetent robber gets a face full of pepper spray

November 22, 2008, 2:46 PM
A woman working at “Lover’s Paradise”, 6504 Cermak, told police a man came into the store and, in Spanish, told her he was looking for something for his esposa.  The woman helped him select a red nightie and they went to the cash register.  Once there, however, the customer implied he had a gun in a bag he carried, and demanded money.  The woman did not believe he had a gun, and tried to snatch the bag away.  During the tussle that ensued, the offender punched the woman in the face, and the woman managed to grab her pepper spray and got him in the face, too.  Once sprayed, the offender fled eastbound on foot.

Police viewed the surveillance video of the incident.  The offender was a male Hispanic in his 20s with a mustache, a dark Chicago Bears hoodie, light-color jeans, white gym shoes, dark gloves and large black-framed eyeglasses.

Alcohol-scented man’s story smells, too

November 22, 2008, 11 AM
A 34-year-old Berwyn man approached an officer at Cermak and Grove to say he had been threatened by a little man with a gun. The complainant stated that, fifteen minutes earlier, as he stood in front of McDonald’s at Cermak and Ridgeland, a stranger emerged from the restaurant, produced a black handgun, and asked, “What up, vato?” The complainant said he then ran west until he encountered the officer.  He said the offender was five feet tall, wore a long black trench coat and appeared intoxicated.  Police noted the complainant’s breath was alcoholic; he was also not winded, despite the several-block run he claimed to have made.

Suspicious sitters include wanted man

November 22, 2008, 2:59 AM
Who’s hanging around your block while you’re sleeping?  Police were dispatched after a complaint of a white van parked on the north side of 16th at Elmwood, with multiple guys inside.  One of the occupants was Evan E. Shovers, 43, of 1717 west Northshore Ave, Chicago*; a check of his name turned up two arrest warrants, one from DuPage County and one from Glen Ellyn.  Police later found the DuPage warrant was quashed, but the Glen Ellyn one was perfectly sound, so Shovers was taken into custody and held for pickup.
