Pitbull kills small leashed dog

May 2, 2008, 3:13 PM
An officer responding to a call about dogs at large came to 16th and Wenonah and saw another officer pick up a small, injured dog.  A 29-year-old woman told police she was standing at 16th and Wenonah with her infant in a stroller and her dog on a leash, waiting for her older child to get out of school, when two or three large dogs ran up and attacked her little dog. Two bystanders helped pull the attacking dogs off her pet, but it was too late.  The little dog died of its injuries, which included puncture wounds to its heart and lungs.  Many children were present in the area, as school had just let out.  Jason M. Oliveros, 22, of 7032 16th, told police he was the owner of the large dogs, which were pitbulls.  He said he did not know how they got out of the back yard.  Police seized the dogs and issued tickets to Olveros.

Passing car’s occupants made harrassing remarks, came around twice

May 2, 2008, 8:43 AM
Police spoke with a woman who said she was harassed while parking her Lincoln Navigator in a commuter space in the 6800 block of Windsor. The woman said she was backing up in order to straighten out the SUV in the parking space when a silver Chevy, westbound on Windsor, stopped quickly.  A passenger yelled and swore at her out his window, The victim said a male white in his late teens or early 20s yelled “Watch where you’re going, you f@$#&!^ b!*@&” as well as other remarks of a harassing nature, then opened the car door as if getting out.  The vehicle then continued west on Windsor.  But as the victim exited the Navigator, she saw the Chevy returning, traveling slowly eastward on Windsor. All the passengers, she said, stared at her.  She said the driver was a male white, about age 30.  Passengers included a male and two females.  She recorded the license plate, which was registered to a 2002 Chevy 4-door owned by a man and a woman in the 3600 block of Kenilworth.

One license plate’s strange journey

May 2, 2008, 2:04 AM
A Chicago woman, age 27, at 13th and Wenonah, told police she had just found—and removed her license plate from someone’s vehicle. She pointed to a maroon Saturn sedan parked nearby.  The officer, it should be noted, never saw the plate attached to the Saturn.  A computer check of the plate revealed it was registered to the Chicago woman on a purple 1995 Saturn, and expired more than a year ago.  The woman said it belonged to a car she has not had for over a year; she said she left it on the car when she gave it to an auto body shop.  Recently, she said, she has been getting parking tickets from several locations within Berwyn.  Using this information, she said, she located the maroon 2000 Saturn parked at 13th and Wenonah bearing her plate.  The 2000 Saturn had three smashed windows.  It was registered to a Hoffman Estates man.  Inside were papers belonging to a woman who lives in the 1900 block of Grove.  Police telephoned her.  She said she is not the owner, but did drive the car, and would say no more.  Police had the 2000 Saturn towed away.

Street fight

May 2, 2008, 1:20 AM
Police responded to a call about a fight in the street at Cermak and Gunderson.  One of the victims, a 58-year-old man, said he and a 53-year-old male friend had just left a bar in the 6500 block of Cermak when a stranger came up behind the older man and tried to lift his wallet from his back pocket.  The victim said he was able to avoid the stranger’s multiple attempts because the stranger was intoxicated and thus off his game.  As they struggled, the victim yelled to his friend for help.  Next, the friend and the stranger started to fight—the stranger with a brick, the friend with a bottle.  Both victims had cuts to their faces.  Police charged Jesus Lemus-Rodriguez, 27, of Cicero, with battery and attempted theft.
