Vandalism to house, cars

Homeowners in the 3500 block of Clarence were awakened by the sound of their doorbell.  Minutes later, a rock broke one of their basement windows.  The man looked out and saw a male Hispanic in his 30s, 5’5” and 140 lbs, entering a black 4-door vehicle parked in front.
3:12 AM
A man caught a stranger urinating on his mom’s Ford Expedition, parked near the Cermak Plaza Walgreen’s.  The two men had a verbal altercation during which the son told the peeing man to stop it.  The offender left in an older black Escalade.  The victim thought the stranger was inside Walgreen’s before the peeing incident and perhaps had been captured on surveillance video.
9 AM
Someone broke a window on a Nissan Sentra, parked in the 2800 block of Harvey, and stole CDs and an iPod from within.
6:53 PM
A victim of criminal damage reported parking a 2002 Mustang near 16th and Elmwood, then finding the roof and hood scratched up.

Gang graffiti continues to be found after midnight, all day

An officer looking for gang graffiti found it, freshly painted, on a dumpster in the 7000 block of 16th.  In the same block, graffiti was found on a truck.

Gang graffiti, recently painted, was found on a garage door in the 1900 block of Clinton.

A brick wall in the 7000 block of 16th was found painted with gang graffiti letters and drawings.
4:37 PM
Grey paint was used to put gang graffiti on the front of a residence in the 1800 block of Kenilworth.
6:46 PM
Gang graffiti was sprayed on the front of a home in the 1400 block of Wenonah.

Gang graffiti not even dry when found

A witness saw three males in the process of painting gang graffiti and symbols on an overhead garage door in the 1500 block of Wenonah.  As the witness approached, the offenders began walking away eastbound on 15th.  When police arrived, the paint was still wet.  Similar graffiti was found on a property in the 1500 block of Home.  The offenders were described as three male Hispanics, dressed in jeans and black sweaters.

No license, speeding, no lights

An officer using radar at 18th and East stopped a Chevy Cavlier for doing 34 MPH in a clearly-posted 20 MPH zone.  Driver Fredy J. Diaz, 17, of the 1600 block of East, told the officer he had neither license nor insurance, adding that he had also driven himself to school earlier.  He was cited for all three offenses.
8:15 PM
A silver Mazda sedan got pulled over at 16th and Harvey because it was driving without required head lights.  The driver apologized for not having the head lights activated, then turned them on, which showed the officer that the front passenger head light did not work.  A check of his name showed the license of Gonzalo Blanco, 21, was suspended.  The car was impounded and he was charged with driving while suspended, driving sans head lights and for the defective head light.
11:07 PM
In the 6400 block of Cermak, a green Pontiac minivan was stopped after travelling eastbound doing 56 MPH in a 25 MPH zone.  Driver Fernando Corona, 22, of the 2500 block of south Springfield, Chicago, was ticketed for speeding and driving unlicensed and uninsured.

Robber preys on lone woman

A 19-year-old Cicero woman reported a robbery that occurred the previous day, April 29, 2008.  The victim said she was walking eastbound in the 6800 block of 23rd when she noticed a man following her.  The man grabbed her throat and demanded her purse, but she would not let go of it.  Just then a car horn sounded, she said.  The man let go and fled on foot.  The victim sustained scratches on her neck, and helped police create a composite image of the robber.  She described him as a male black, 6’ and slender, wearing a black pullover hoodie, dark jeans and red-and-black gym shoes.

Video-game gambling session ends in unfriendly manner

A man from the 1800 block of Gunderson called 911 to report a theft.  The 34-year-old man told police he had been playing a video game, for money, with a friend from Chicago.  They argued, he said, and the Chicago man grabbed the cash and left.  The complainant said they were playing for about $400. Police advised the man it was a civil matter.

Attempted burglaries

Homeowners in the 6800 block of Riverside Drive reported finding a window on an entry door broken out, though no entry was made.

Someone broke into a garage in the 3400 block of Ridgeland, but apparently didn’t take anything.

Noise violation

An officer heard a loud Honda Civic in the 6900 block of Cermak and impounded the car.  Driver Jason <. Szwarc, 23, of Lyons, was cited for violating Berwyn’s noise ordinance.

The victim of a bicycle stolen out of a garage in the 1800 block of Clinton told police the garage door was left open by mistake.

Rowdy youths interfere with neighborhood peace, callers plea for help

Citizen complaints alerted police to a group of loitering teens youths who reportedly hung out at a residence in the 3500 block of Euclid from 4 PM to 6 AM, drinking and using drugs, after being asked to keep away.  The complainants also said the rowdies included an 18-year-old male and his 12-year-old girlfriend, and that the disturbances are a regular thing.

Safety checkpoint removes more unlicensed drivers from road

Police operated a traffic safety checkpoint from midnight to 2 AM.  At 12:35, randomly selecting a Saturn to check for safety compliance, they discovered someone driving on a suspended license.  The Saturn was impounded.  Driver Rhonda Ziemba, 29, of North Riverside, was charged with driving while suspended.
12:43 AM
Police stopped a silver Ford Focus whose driver could not produce a license or insurance proof.  Tickets for those offenses were issued to Darryl L. Foreman, 23, of the 3200 block of west Arthington, Chicago.
12:45 AM
Tickets for driving without license or insurance were given to the driver of a green Jeep:  39-year-old Senen Hemera of the 2000 block of west 18th Place, Chicago.

Stopped for not wearing a seat belt, the driver of a white Oldsmobile was found to have a suspended license and an active DuPage County arrest warrant.  The car was impounded.  Tony B. Halton, 28, was cited for no seat belt, no front plate, no insurance and driving while suspended.  He was then processed for the warrant.

A Ford Explorer, randomly stopped at the safety checkpoint, had a driver not wearing his seat belt.  Jose C. Delatorre of Glendale Heights was cited for that, no front plate, and driving on a suspended license.  The SUV was impounded for the suspension.
1:46 AM
The random stop of a grey Honda revealed the driver’s license was suspended.  The car was impounded, and Rodolfo R. Rivera, 21, of the 1400 block of East, was cited for the offense.
