Dazed woman found near middle-of-night stove fire

April 29, 2008, 3:15 AM
Calls to 911 reported smoke coming from an apartment in the 2100 block of Cuyler.  Emergency responders saw fire blazing inside; police kicked in the door and found the stove on fire.  A woman was standing inches from the fire, apparently oblivious to her surroundings, unresponsive to commands and naked from the waist down.  When police began to pull her to the door and safety, she fell to the floor and refused to be helped.  Fire fighters extinguished the fire; everyone else was out of the building and nobody was hurt.  A preliminary fire investigation determined the fire started when someone ignited a large bundle of papers on the stove.  The woman was taken to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
