Garage and vehicle burglaries
January 31, 2008, 2:32 AM
A man in the 3500 block of Gunderson heard his car alarm, and came out to find the driver-side door of the Buick sedan was open. The lock had been pulled out of the door; a case of CDs was stolen.
5:35 AM
Two garages—in the 3800 block of Oak Park Ave. and the other in the 3700 block of Euclid—were found with their service doors broken, though nothing was taken.
7:10 AM
A Mazda 4-door parked in the 1900 block of Harvey was found with a broken window and its $150 satellite radio gone.
6:45 PM
Someone entered a Nissan Altima, parked in the 6900 block of 30th Place, and stole two bank cards, according to the victim.
10:19 PM
In the 3500 block of Ridgeland, a burglar forced open the side door of a garage and stole a power drill, a hand saw, a large wrench and the garage remote control. The door was damaged, as were lights inside the garage.
Unpaid Bensenville-to-Berwyn fare ends in theft charge

A cabb driver called police from 23rd and Ridgeland to report a theft of service. The cabbie said he drove a man from Bensenville to the 2200 block of Ridgeland. The man got out, greeted a waiting woman with a hug, and walked away with her. The cabbie, who had not been paid the $35 fare, said he yelled after the man but was ignored. Police chats with various witnesses led them to a man behind Hollywood Video at Ridgeland and Cermak; the cabbie positively identified Richard W. Rauhula, 41, of Bensenville, as his passenger. Rauhula was charged with theft of service.
Alley traffic, wrong way

An officer patrolling in heavy traffic because of Prairie Oak school dismissal time noticed a red Dodge Caravan traveling southbound in the 1400 block of Oak Park/Euclid alley, despite the prohibition on alley traffic. Driver Maria Salgado, 31, of the 1500 block of East, was cited for that as well as for driving without a license or insurance.

In the 2500 block of Highland, an officer saw a green Ford van travel northbound on Highland from 26th. Highland is one way southbound. Driver Tomas Parra, 43, of Cicero, identified himself with a Mexican ID card instead of the requested license and insurance. He was cited for driving unlicensed and uninsured, and for going the wrong way on a one-way street.

Duffle-toting dude suspected in DVD destruction

The director of Berwyn’s library, 2701 Harlem, told police the night janitors have been finding broken DVD cases in the men’s bathroom, and several DVDs are now missing from the collection. A suspect in the case is a 38-year-old Broadview man, known to library staff because of the disturbance he caused when he first started showing up. He is known to take multiple DVDs out of the media section on the second floor and take them down to the first floor, where he watches them on his DVD player. A call to the Broadview library revealed the man also got in some unspecified trouble there; in addition, he is believed to be homeless and living out of a car. He reportedly enters the library with two large duffle bags, which he totes around with him during his visits. The investigation continues.

Hydrant blocker towed

A red Dodge Caravan was towed from the 3200 block of Oak Park because it was parked blocking a fire hydrant. The van was cited for that and for its expired plates; it was registered to a 46-year-old Glen Ellyn woman.
Fraudulent credit card use after purse, wallets stolen from teachers during school day

Two teachers at Havlicek elementary school, 6401 15th, reported thefts to police. The first teacher said her purse was stolen between 1 and 3 PM the previous day. It contained a wallet with a debit card, two credit cards, car keys and about $300 cash. At 7:40 PM, the teacher told police her debit card had been used at grocery stores three times already: one charge was for $40, once for $196.52, and once for $241.84.
A second teacher said her wallet was stolen out of her purse; the wallet held three store credit cards, a MasterCard, a checkbook, etc. She was unaware of the theft until MasterCard’s fraud division phoned her to report suspicious activity on the card; someone used it to charge $179 worth of items at a Target store in Chicago.
Garage burglaries

An officer spotted a garage in the 200 block of Harvey with both doors open. The victim was alerted, and reported missing a $280 snowblower and a box of tools valued at $200.

A caller, alerted by the garage alarm, reported seeing two men hauling items from a garage to a van in the 3600 block of Harvey. Stolen: a $200 stereo and fgour large cardboard boxes, whose contents the victim could not recall.
Assault charge, warrant discovery, follow fight over money

Police responded to a disturbance in a house at 15th and Grove, where they encountered an intoxicated 26-year-old man. The man began to tell police about the incident, but between his intoxication and the fact that his jaw was partially wired shut, not much information was exchanged. The victim, a paraplegic living in the same home, said the offender started an argument about the household bills, swore, and came at the victim with a kitchen knife. The offender was charged with aggravated assault; a check of his name also revealed a Cook County arrest warrant for aggravated assault, dated last November 30.

Woman accused of taking out displeasure on neighbor’s SUV

Police came to the 1800 block of Oak Park Avenue to speak to a man who reported seeing a woman throwing something at his parked SUV’s windshield. The windshield was cracked; it appeared a brick was used to do the damage. A second man added he knew the woman’s name and said she lived a couple of doors down from the two men’s apartment building. The second man said the woman has been throwing bottles at their building for the past few weeks. Just then, the 48-year-old woman appeared and the victim positively identified her. During the course of the ensuing discussion, it became apparent that the woman was 1) angry with the second man for something or other and 2) had most likely mistaken the victim’s SUV for his, as they were alike in color and style. The victim signed a complaint against the woman.

Pair reject obscene offer

A man and a woman called police to report they were walking on Cermak near Scoville, passing in front of a bank, when a man standing there grabbed his own crotch and asked them if they “wanted it”. The complainants pointed out the man to police, who noticed the offender had been drinking. Ernest R. Meyer, 53, of the 6800 block of 21st, was cited for disorderly conduct.

Felony DUI charges for Cicero driver

An officer stopped a purple Dodge Caravan after seeing it swerve into oncoming traffic while northbound in the 2100 block of East. Other cars were forced to swerve also, in order to avoid a collision. When asked to show his license and proof of insurance, driver Gilberto Garzon, 36, of Cicero, handed the officer his whole wallet. He appeared intoxicated and failed several field sobriety tests. A check of his name showed his license had been revoked for a previous DUI offense. Garzon’s blood alcohol level was .267, more than three times the legal limit of .08. After being read his rights, Garzon told police he had been drinking at a house near 28th and Oak Park since 4:30 OM the previous day, and drank all night instead of going to sleep. He was charged with felony DUI without a license and felony DUI without insurance; additional citations included driving on a revoked license, DUI, DUI over .08, improper lane use and no insurance.

Car stolen in Chicago, left on Clarence

An officer patrolling the 1400 block of Clarence noticed a Nissan Altima with temporary spares instead of conventional tires. The car had been reported stolen in Chicago, and the owner was notified.
Broken glass and burglary

In the 6500 block of 27th, someone shot 4 BBs at the glass pane of a door of a house.

Entering by breaking a window, a burglar got into a GMC Yukon parked in the 1500 block of Kenilworth and stole a $500 CD/TV combination.
9:59 AM
In the 1200 block of Ridgeland, an Aurora man reported, someone broke a window of his Chevy Monte Carlo and stole a cell phone charger.
