“So you like hitting women?”

February 4, 2008, 2:25 AM
An 18-year-old man from the 6200 block of 21st told police three men entered his apartment and punched him. When officers arrived at the man’s apartment, he appeared intoxicated.  The alleged victim told police he and his female roommate had attended an underage drinking party in Riverside.  Afterward, he said, they went to White Castle, where he insulted the woman. He said he thought that because of the insult, the woman invited three men to their shared apartment to batter him, while a female friend of hers watched. The victim refused medical treatment initially; police saw some red marks near his left eye.
Once at the police station, the man’s story changed.  He said a fourth man was present at the alleged battering, and the female observer was not there after all.  Later, he said he lost consciousness after the encounter.
After an officer told the man and his mother that someone would be charged with misdemeanor battery in the case, the mother objected, stating she could not believe four men could break into her son’s apartment, drag him out of bed and not be charged with felonies.  The officer was obliged to point out to the mother that it was not regarded as a break-in, since the female roommate is believed to have allowed the men inside, and also that at no time did the alleged victim say anything to police about “four men dragging him out of bed.”
The female companion of the victim’s roommate told police not only did the victim call his roommate a “fatass”, he also pulled her hair and punched her more than once in the head.  She said he did this as he drove, causing him to run up over the curb at 21st and Lombard.
The victim’s roommate also told police the victim hit her in the head as he drove his black Saab, slamming her head against the window in the process.  Once they reached their apartment, she said she made a remark to the effect that his deceased father should have raised him not to hit girls, inspiring him to punch her in the face.
One of the men interviewed by police stated he got a call from the woman roommate, who was in tears and in need of a ride.  He said he and
some friends arrived to pick her up, entering the door opened by the woman.  One of the men told the victim, “I can’t believe you hit a girl”; another reportedly said, “So you like hitting women?”, then a couple of the men punched him.  The witness stated he believed the victim got what he deserved.
Witnesses stated the encounter lasted about three minutes.  The accused men, ages 18, 19 and 20, are all Berwyn residents.

Three different names and a fake ID add up to felony charge for non-citizen

February 3, 2008, 5:50 PM
A manager at Circuit City in Cermak Plaza reported a man was trying to obtain credit with a fake Illinois state ID card.  Police spoke with the man, who told them his name was “Jaime Gildo.” In his effort to obtain credit, the man presented two IDs to the store:  one was a Mexican ID card, the other a fake-looking state ID.  When police checked on the name on the fake ID, there was no record on file.  “Gildo” was arrested.  After his arrest, he made a statement to police.  He said he got the fake ID six months ago from a friend; he added that he is an illegal alien.  Fingerprints revealed ‘Gildo” was actually 34-year-old Juan Garcia of Cicero.  After being read his rights, Garcia told police he bought the fraudulent ID card on the street on the north side of Chicago.  He said he did it because he is here illegally and had money problems.  He stated he has other credit cards under the name “Jaime Zermeno”, then said “Jaime Zermeno” was his real name.  He said he has lived here eleven years and has a brother who often uses his name for false identification also.  The assistant state’s attorney approved a felony charge of possession of a fraudulent ID.

February 3, 2008, 3:50 PM
Callers fearing the presence of a dog-fighting ring alerted police to numerous people entering a house in the 2600 block of Clarence, east side, in the company of large dogs.  Police spoke with the 20-year-old homeowner, who explained his dog obedience group was meeting in the basement.  Police entered the basement and found seven dogs in cages, and one on a leash.  All were adult pitbulls, except for one English bulldog.  The dogs did not appear to be involved in fighting, but police advised the man of the hazards of having that many in animals in such a small space.  All the other people left with their dogs.
