Con game deceives elderly citizen

December 20, 2007, 11:15 AM
While one man distracted her in the front room, a second apparently stole money from an elderly woman in the 3800 block of Wisconsin.  The victim said a man rang her back doorbell, claiming he was working on power lines and needed to “check the outlets in her house”.  She allowed him inside, and he walked her into the front room, where they “checked outlets” for about 30 minutes.  Later, she realized someone must have come inside during this incident, because she was missing $944 in cash.

Felony charges for man in garage burglary

December 20, 2007, 2:56 AM
A man in the 1300 block of Highland called police to say he arrived home and saw the light on in his garage, but grew suspicious when it suddenly went dark again. Police opened the garage door and found 52-year-old Sebastian Hernandez of Cicero hiding under a vehicle in the garage.  He was taken into custody, and police recovered a flathead screwdriver from his pocket.  A check of his name showed Hernandez was wanted for burglary by Cook County, and also that he had been convicted of burglary on five previous occasions.  Per the Vienna Convention, he was offered the opportunity to refer the matter to his country’s consulate, but declined. After being read his rights, Hernandez told police he entered the garage looking for items to sell for food and cocaine.  He was charged with felony burglary and felony possession of burglary tools.

The Finding in the Snowbank:  kidnapped Baby Jesus back in Berwyn nativity display

December 19, 2007
The figure of baby Jesus, stolen from a nativity display in the front yard of a house in the 3400 block of Oak Park on December 5, was found across the street in a snowbank, where the thief apparently discarded it.  A neighbor spotted the figure, guessed where it came from and alerted the homeowner.

Perennial candidate jailed again, suspected in street harassment

December 19, 2007, 11:43 PM
An abandoned 911 call led police to a house in the 3700 block of Wisconsin, where a 69-year-old man stated his 36-year-old son tried to choke him.  The son, Richard B. Mayers, was arrested and charged with domestic battery.

The same man was arrested recently for a similar incident:

At 12:42 PM, also on December 19th, a 23-year-old Berwyn woman reported she was pushing her child in a stroller when a man at the corner of 38th and Wisconsin began yelling.  When the woman looked in his direction, she said, the man yelled, “I’m talking to you, you (insert racial/sexual slurs here)!” She said the man then chased her, but gave up and entered a house in the 3700 block of Wisconsin.  The address he entered was the same as that of the residence from which the abandoned 911 call emanated.

Hey—HEY!  Put that back!

December 19, 2007, 5:10 PM
The manager of Metro Tow Yard, 3103 Roosevelt, told police a 38-year-old Cicero man arrived to remove a child safety seat from his towed vehicle.  The manager told the guy he could take only the car seat, but the man ignored him, snatched a plastic bag full of something or other out of the car, and ran past the manager, bumping him and causing him to fall to the ground and injure his elbow and finger.  A tow yard worker detained the man for police, but the injured man decided not to sign a complaint after all.

Babalu believer beheads beasts blocks from Berwyn

From the Wednesday Journal:

Animal sacrifices found in Barrie Park

The headless corpses of three animals were left at the top of the Barrie Park sledding hill Wednesday night. Witnesses said they observed a man pull the decapitated bodies of a goat and a rooster from a plastic bag and leave them on the ground. The man then fled, leaving a headless hawk in the bag.

Police say they suspect the incident is related to a Caribbean religious sect called Santeria.

“Animal sacrifices aren’t unusual there,” said Deputy Chief Robert Scianna. Scianna said the animals were not killed at the park, just left there.

The remains were turned over to the village’s animal control department.

Ho ho ho: woman robber wears Santa hat, gets only four bucks for her trouble

December 19, 2007, 1:29 PM
A Berwyn woman told police she went to a cigarette store near Cermak and Cuyler.  When she emerged and walked south on Cuyler, she said, a woman in a Santa hat ran up to her and yelled, “What you got, bitch? What you got?  You got any money for me?” The woman tried to yank the victim’s purse, but the victim hung on.  The robber punched the victim in the eye, causing the victim to fall.  When she fell, four $1 bills fell from her coat pocket.  The robber snatched up the dollar bills, aggressively displayed a silver-colored knife, and yelled, “Give me your money, bitch!” When the victim refused, the robber kicked her in the ribs and threatened to kill her if she called police.  The robber entered the passenger side of a red or maroon older car, possibly a station wagon, and fled eastbound on Cermak.  The getaway driver wore a hoody.  The victim described the robber as a female black, 5’8”, medium build, in a dark winter jacket and the Santa hat.
