Gang members seen squaring off in street

November 29, 2007, 9:33 PM
An officer saw a red Buick sedan and a black Honda Accord stopped in the intersection of Ridgeland and Cermak, beside several men who were confronting a lone man.  A fight appeared imminent.  When the group saw police, the lone man began walking south, and the others reentered their cars.  Police stopped the Honda at Vacin and caught up with 22-year-old Jose Dominguez of the 1500 block of Oak Park Avenue; the others in the Honda fled, leaving the empty Honda behind.  Dominguez told police he had just gotten a ride from the other guys but did not know driver’s name.  He said he and the others belong to a gang; he said they stopped in the intersection to confront the lone man because he was a member of a rival gang. Police also located the lone man—38-year-old Carlos Garcia of the 3600 block of Clarence.  Garcia said two cars pulled up and yelled gang slogans, so he responded with a different slogan.  Next, police noticed a man approaching the abandoned Honda: 31-year-old Marcelo Malvaez of the 2600 block of Home.  Malvaez said he drove the Honda but was not involved in the gang incident, though he admitted membership.  Malvaez and Dominguez were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

Man shoves mom; charged with battery, violating order of protection

November 29, 2007, 8:33 AM
Police found a 59-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man yelling at their adult son in the east alley of the 3700 block of Wisconsin.  The son, 36-year-old Richard B. Mayers—a Green Party congressional candidate—apparently believed his parents were throwing away his “political papers”.  The father told police Mayers shoved his mom in the chest in an effort to get at a box of papers, despite both parents’ insistence that the box contained only trash.  Mayers also tried to retrieve a box from a garage truck; police saw no political papers in the box. The parents told police Mayers has a history of psychological problems and was not currently on medication.  Mayers was charged with one count of domestic battery and one count of violating the order of protection his parents have against him.

20-year-old expelled high schooler makes threats

November 29, 2007, 7:55 AM
Morton West high school, 2400 Home, reported a 20-year-old man—expelled from the school—made suspicious references to notorious school shootings.  Police were told the man had his hearing cancelled the previous evening because he showed up 30 minutes late; he was told at that time he would have to write an explanation of his absence to the dean.  The man commented to a security security guard that things like this “are why Virginia Tech and Columbine incidents happen”.  He was then told to leave the building and did.  Police visited the man at his home, where he agreed to a search of the premises.  No weapons were found. The man said he was sorry for his remarks and did not mean them.
