Tall, giggling man robs victims at gunpoint in Shoe Warehouse

October 29, 2007, 11:33 AM
Witnesses described the Shoe Warehouse robber as a male black, 6’6” and 230 lbs, who displayed a dark-color semi-automatic handgun and demanded cash from the wallets of various victims, then fled out the front door. Two men were obliged to hand over their cash, but a third showed the robber his wallet was already empty.  The witnesses said the offender “giggled” when demanding money, and had a “very calm” demeanor throughout the incident.  He was described as wearing a green jacket and dark knit hat with a small brim.  Witnesses helped create the composite image linked below.
During the search for the offender, police were told of two suspicious males hanging around a third-floor porch in the rear of a building in the 2100 block of Oak Park.  Police found the two and showed them to the robbery victims, but neither one was the robber.  The boys, ages 16 and 17, were cited for violating Berwyn’s daytime curfew, and returned to the custody of their mothers.

An officer patrolling near 27th and Ridgeland noticed a Nissan sedan, running and occupied, but parked with the lights off. He asked driver Ruben Cantu, 48, of the 2100 block of south Washtenaw, Chicago, whether all was well.  Cantu said he and his female passenger were “just talking.” The woman, 25-year-old Mychal Loren Buckmaster of the 2800 block of west 23rd Place, Chicago, was asked the same question.  Buckmaster told the officer the pair were just leaving a friend’s house, adding, “I’m not going to lie, I was getting high.” Cantu was cited for driving on a suspended license and without insurance.  When asked whether the car contained any items it shouldn’t, Buckmaster stated she had some syringes in a case on the floor.  She opened it to show the officer; it held five syringes, and a glass pipe with copper screening of the type commonly used to smoke crack cocaine.  Buckmaster was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
