Berwyn Cleaners shut down for various violations

Police met with city officials at Berwyn Cleaners, 7125 Ogden, as the business owners were advised the place was to be closed until building, zoning, health and fire-safety violations were corrected. Police oversaw the locking-up of the business. Officials told the owners the place would have to pass inspection before it could be reopened.

A 39-year-old woman in the 6500 block of 28th Place told police her three brothers-in-law were arguing. One turned away to leave and in the process unintentionally knocked over the woman’s son. The mom said she got upset and argued with him, but he left before police got there. Since the incident appeared to have played itself out, police advised the remaining parties to conduct themselves properly in the presence of children.

Purple Mustang to sit quietly in impound yard

A police sergeant stopped a purple Ford Mustang at 23rd and Home for violating Berwyn’s noise ordinance with its sound system; anything audible over 75 feet gets impounded, and a $500 fee is imposed. The driver, a 20-year-old man from the 2400 block of Home, got tickets for noise, no insurance and no license.
Homeowner suspects lurker of planning gutter theft

A man from the 1300 block of Gunderson told police he saw a man in dark clothes in his back yard eight hours earlier, at 3 AM. The homeowner feared the man intended to steal gutters. Police advised him to call right away next time this sort of thing happens.

Three-car accident

A 43-year-old man from the 1200 block of Wesley was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, following a collision with two other cars at Grove and Cermak.

Thursday’s burglaries

A burglar entered a garage in the 3600 block of Ridgeland through an unlocked service door and stole a tall toolbox, a child’s bicycle, garden tools and a pool water pump.
4:38 PM
A pry tool was used to break in via the side door of a garage in the 1600 block of Kenilworth. The offender stole a red Craftsman mower.
Purse in trunk of missing car

A grey Kia Sephia parked in the 2200 block of Cuyler was stolen. The victim told police her purse—containing her driver’s license, state ID, credit cards and $60 cash—was, for some reason, in the trunk of the stolen vehicle.
Interrupted in mid-burgle: offender drops tool, runs away

A caller in the 2200 block of Grove called police to report a man was banging on the side of a house. En route to the scene, police got an update: now the man was inside a tan SUV parked on that block. Police pulled in behind the tan Chevy Blazer, shone a spotlight inside it and saw a man move from the driver’s seat across the passenger seat and jump out through the passenger door. He threw down a large screwdriver and fled westbound through gangways in the 2200 block of Grove. Police chased him, yelling “police”, but the man did not stop. He removed a brown hoody and flung it to the ground as he ran. Police chased the man through three different yards before losing sight of him. The original caller could not described the offender except she believed he was black. The Blazer had a broken window and a damaged steering column. One officer was injured by a fall during the foot chase. The car yielded fingerprints, and the investigation continues.
Fat man looked armed

A woman who suspected gang activity in the 1800 block of East called police to report seeing a dark SUV, possibly a Suburban or Expedition, drive past very slowly. The SUV, she said, parked in the 6700 block of 18th, and she saw two men get out. She described one man as 6’ tall, very heavy, with a bulge in his rear waistband, possibly a gun. The suspect walked past her East Avenue residence, then she called police. Officers did not find the man.

Sharp object mars van

A maroon 1999 Dodge minivan, parked in the 1600 block of Harvey, was found damaged. Someone used something sharp to scratch up the paint on the passenger side.

Thief stuffs Nikes into pants, flees

Security at Shoe Carnival, 7001 Cermak, called police when a man stole a pair of shoes, then fled northbound. The guard stated she noticed a man enter the store accompanied by a woman pushing a stroller with a little girl in it. The guard saw the man stuff a pair of white Nike Infiltrators down the front of his pants, then run out the door at her approach. Police spoke with the woman, a resident of the 1100 block of north Ridgeway, Chicago. She said she knows the offender only as “Kool Aid”, and thinks he may live near Roosevelt and Independence. She said they met on the bus on the way to Cermak Plaza. The guard described the offender as male, black, 5’10” and heavy, wearing an oversized white T-shirt and blue jeans.
Alley abuse gets driver arrested again

An officer saw a red Ram pickup truck travel northbound through the 1500 block of Wenonah/Wisconsin alley, then turn onto 14th. A four-year-old child sat on the front seat, without any carseat. The officer recognized the driver, 57-year-old Emiliano Jimenez of the 1300 block of Gunderson, from an arrest two days earlier involving criminal trespass. Jimenez was arrested and identified via fingerprints, since he had no license to drive. He was out on bond for a July arrest for driving unlicensed. He was cited for prohibited alley traffic, no license and failing to properly restrain the child in a carseat.

Loud trucks towed, impounded

A grey Toyota pickup truck was stopped and impounded for violating Bewyn’s noise ordinance in the 6500 block of Cermak; the truck could be heard 175 feet away. Driver Ruben H. Recendez, 19, of Cicero, received the $500 noise ticket.
9:26 PM
A beige Suburban was stopped at 15th and Euclid because it was audible 130 feet away. As he passed the parked squad car, the driver turned it down, but it was already too late. Sergio Vaca, 21, of Cicero received a noise violation ticket and the truck was towed.
Sedan vs SUV

After an accident at 18th and Ridgeland involving a sedan and an SUV, one driver was ticketed for driving unlicensed and uninsured: 37-year-old Alfredo Munoz, of the 2200 block of Cuyler.
