Weird requests degenerate into assault

September 24, 2007, 9:47 PM
A cabdriver called to tell police a man pulled a knife on him in the 7100 block of Roosevelt, then fled north on Harlem.  Police went to the 1100 block of Harlem, where they found a man matching the victim’s description.  The suspect was ordered to stop, drop whatever he was holding and lie face down.  A patdown located a 9.5 inch long metal welding rod in the man’s pocket, along with steel wool and a glass pipe commonly used to ingest narcotics.  The cabbie positively identified the suspect as his attacker.  He said the man asked him how for a ride to a certain location; the answer was a few dollars.  The suspect then reportedly asked “Would you take a T-shirt for a ride?  Would you take a cake for a ride?” The cabbie said he only accepted cash.  The suspect then missed a bus at the corner.  The victim said the suspect got mad, blamed him and held a cold metal object against the victim’s throat, stating he was going to “cut” him.  Talman Hegwood, 59, of the 5100 block of south Damen, Chicago, was charged with aggravated assault and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Felony charge for Chicago driver on Ogden

September 24, 2007, 4:13 AM
An officer in the 6700 block of Ogden noticed a black Mercury Cougar in a gas station lot, occupied by a sleeping man.  The key was in the ignition; the officer tried without success to wake the driver.  A strong odor of alcohol came from inside the Cougar.  An open 24-ounce can of Bud Lite was visible on the console.  When paramedics arrived, they were able to wake the man and help him out of the car. A name check of Guillermo Garcia, 35, of the 3900 block of west 24th, Chicago, showed an active arrest warrant out of McCook.  Because Garcia had two previous suspensions for alcohol and/or insurance violations, the state’s attorney approved a felony charge of aggravated driving while suspended. He was also cited for DUI, DUI over.08, and driving uninsured.
