Morning graffiti arrests
April 26, 2007, 11:30 AM
Police arrested two juveniles caught with a can of spray paint. They made a statement as follows: they were smoking a “blunt” and had the spray can with them when police spotted them. Both admitted they were gang members and told police their gang nicknames. They said they bought the paint at Murray’s, 21st and Oak Park Avenue, and used it to tag, but only in Chicago. They said they do not do graffiti in Berwyn because of the “heavy heat” the Berwyn police apply to gangbangers and taggers. One of the juveniles said he has a problem with a member of his gang; he says this fellow has done lots of gang graffiti in Berwyn, but no matter how many times he is told to stop, he only responds, “F---- the Berwyn police.”

Woman owns car, not license
April 26, 2007, 2:55 AM
An officer patrolling Cermak Road at 10 MPH, looking for broken windows, noticed an odd thing. A green 1997 Chevy Cavalier was right behind him, also going 10 MPH – for four blocks. Since the limit is 25 MPH, this seemed suspicious. The officer maneuvered behind the car and ran the plates, learning that the car was listed as stolen. Several police cars converged at Oak Park Avenue and Cermak to stop the driver, 19-year-old Desire D. Clay, of Chicago. She was in fact the owner of the Chevy; Chicago police had not yet removed the “stolen” designation from the system. However, a name check of Ms. Clay showed she had no valid license to drive, so she was ticketed and the car was towed.

The owner said $3,099.75 was missing from the cash register.
Wrong first name insufficient disguise
April 26, 2007, 1:24 AM
An officer patrolling Cermak with radar detected the only vehicle in the area traveling 38 MPH in a 25 MPH zone. He stopped the 1999 Ford Escort, which had no front plates, at Oak Park Avenue and Cermak. The driver could not produce a license or proof of insurance. He gave police a name that did not exist in the computer. The car was towed and the man fingerprinted at the station. The 24-year-old had given police a false name. In addition to the traffic tickets he received, he was charged with attempted obstruction of justice for the lame attempt to fool police.
The case of the redheaded decoy
April 26, 2007, 1 AM
A 21-year-old Berwyn woman told police she was robbed at 12:30 AM on April 25 while in the 6200 block of 15th. After work, the woman parked in the 1500 block of Lombard. A heavyset woman with red, wavy, shoulder-length hair knocked on her car window and asked for help in what the victim described as “a ghetto accent.” The redhead claimed she was from Romeoville and had a flat tire. She told the victim, “Girl, everyone is so mean here and no one will help me.” It was raining, so the victim took pity on this woman and began walking on 15th with her. The redhead asked to use the victim’s cell phone to “call her mother”. When the victim handed over the phone, the redhead looked behind them. This caused the victim to look back as well. She saw two males in black hoodies approaching, and immediately took the phone back. One of the men grabbed the victim’s purse, breaking the strap. The men ran west on 15th and fled in an older white car. The stolen purse held the victim’s credit cards, driver’s license, Social Security card and makeup. The redhead was nowhere to be seen.
