Evil communications corrupt good manners

A man called police to say people he recognizes as “hanging out” in the 6400 block of 26th were applying graffiti to the Elks Lodge at 2600 Ridgeland. When the vandals saw him, four ran off and a fifth fled in a car. The witness reported the license number to police. The door of the Elks Lodge was found to have freshly-applied graffiti in black and pink. Police spoke with the mom of one of the suspects, who said yes, his friends came over, but she was not sure her son was involved. The boy is 14; the friends are all 18-22. The plates reported by the witness go to a man in the 2700 block of Grove.

Purpose of Order of Protection apparently misunderstood

A 26-year-old woman living in the 1400 block of Grove told police her ex-boyfriend, Augustine Rios Jr. Of Chicago, violated an order of protection by showing up and asking to talk with her. She refused and called police. While police were standing there talking with the woman, Rios, age 30, continued to call and text her cellphone. Police phoned Rios and explained the order of protection means “no contact”.
Honda Element vandalized

A woman parked her Honda Element in the 2600 block of Harvey yesterday. Today, she found her rear window broken and the rear wiper broken off.

The owner of a white 1998 Suburban says he lent the truck to a Chicago man he knows as Jose. He trusted Jose because Jose lives with the Suburban-owner’s uncle. Jose asked for the truck to go pick up his wife somewhere. But today, Uncle called to say his apartment had been robbed and his stereo taken. The Suburban has not returned, and its owner tried phoning Jose without success. Next step: check with Chicago police to see if the Suburban has turned up.

Loud car impounded, Cicero man ticketed

An officer could hear a 2001 Chevy Express 250 feet away from where the vehicle sat thumping at Harlem and Cermak. The driver, 22-year-old Sergio Guzman of Cicero, produced a Texas driver’s license, which was still valid, but the vehicle was silenced and impounded.
Intoxicated out-of-towner mistakes funeral home for motel

A 911 call brought police to the 1200 block of Kenilworth where police found 29-year-old Barbara Sadiewicz of Melrose Park knocking on the door of the Parkwyn Funeral Home. She told police she was looking for a motel room. Her breath was strongly alcoholic, and she had an active arrest warrant out of Will County for theft. She was arrested and taken to the police station.
Teen suspected in car theft, accident

At 30th and Harlem and blue 2001 Chevy van cut off a Dodge Caravan by suddenly turning left in front of it, smacking the Dodge in the right side. The Chevy then lost control, hit the curb at the northeast corner of the intersection. The Chevy’s wheel broke off and hit a Toyota Corolla. The Chevy’s driver and two passengers fled on foot. Inside the Chevy, police found a black hoody and a homemade pot pipe. The Chevy turned out to have been taken without the permission of its owner. The suspect is the owner’s grandson, a 17-year-old male from Broadview.

A stray collie was found in the 1300 block of Scoville and taken to A-American vet for safekeeping.
Downspout thieves target eight garages

An officer found eight garages in one neighborhood missing their metal downspouts. Five garages were vandalized in the 2400 block of Harvey, one in the 2400 block of Highland and two in the 2500 block of Lombard.
Two blocks, two graffiti defacements

A garage door in the 2500 block of Clinton got tagged in grey spray paint. Another one got the same thing in the 2500 block of Wesley.
Car towed for blocking garage

A homeowner in the 2400 block of East called to report a red Nissan Sentra had been abandoned in his alley for at least two hours, trapping his own car in his garage. The owner, 21-year-old Abraham Leon of Cicero, could not be reached and the Nissan was towed away.
Glass all gone

An officer spotted a building in the 7100 block of Ogden with all its windows shattered. The owner was called, as was a board-up company. Four 4x12-foot windows and one 3x7-foot glass door were damaged.
Bar music irritates neighboring bar’s patrons

The owner of Pat & Joe’s bar on Cermak called police about excessive noise coming from the Ixtapa restaurant next door at 6714 Cermak. She said she asked the Ixtapa people to turn it down because it was bothering her customers, but they refused. Police entered Pat and Joe’s; they could easily hear loud music from Ixtapa inside the bar. The 50-year-old owner of Ixtapa, Reyna Segura, was ticketed for violating the noise ordinance.

At La Aduana, 6736 Cermak, a guy from Glendale Heights told police someone hit him in the head with a bottle.
Minivan damages police car, traffic sign

An officer responding to a call about a battery victim at La Aduana bar was headed there in one of Berwyn’s new Dodge Charger squad cars, using lights and sirens, when a 2001 Ford Windstar entered the intersection of East and 24th and struck the squad. The driver, a 21-year-old man, said he had not heard or seen the sirens and lights. But two male witnesses saw the accident and were not certain the minivan had even stopped before entering the intersection. The driver was ticketed for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle; damage to a city vehicle, and damage to a city traffic sign.
