Two blocks, two rocks

Two residences a block apart were damaged; each had a rock thrown through a window. One was in the 1600 block of Lombard, the other in the 1800 block.
Parking lot rage

A 38-year-old Cicero woman told police that when she pulled her Durango into a parking space near Shoe Carnival at Cermak Plaza, a woman in a Dodge van yelled at her for taking that spot. The van driver then jumped out of the van, scratched the Durango with a key and drove away. The victim got her license plate number. The van was registered to a woman from the 1600 block of north Maypole, Chicago.
Chief Kushner impounds noisemaker car; day’s noise haul totals $1500

Police Chief Kushner stopped a 1999 Chevy sedan for excessive noise at 16th and East. The 29-year-old driver, a man from the 1900 block of Home, will have to pay the $500 fee to retrieve the impounded car. Other noise impound stops of the day: Jesus Quinones, 21, of Forest Park, whose loud 1992 Mercury 4-door was taken away for being audible for over 75 feet when it was pulled over at 16th and Scoville; and a Dodge Saturn heard 100 feet away in the 3500 block of Oak Park Avenue—the 30-year-old man driving it lives in the 3100 block of Euclid.

Berwyn man gets three tickets following accident

The driver of a brown 1989 Olds sedan involved in an accident in the 2600 block of Clarence told police he had no license. The 23-year-old man, who lives in the 2700 block of Wesley, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving without a valid license and driving an uninsured vehicle.
Cruelty charge for man who left dogs penned outside all day

Three dogs left in a kennel meant to house only one dog had barked all day, according to calls to police. The kennel was in a back yard in the 1200 block of Wenonah. Officers could see why the dogs were frantic: they had no water. Police spoke to the owner’s wife, who refused to sign the ticket, saying they were his dogs. The 61-year-old was cited for cruelty to animals. The court date for the cruelty case is Thursday, June 28, at 3 PM in the Community Room of the police department building, 6401 31st St., Berwyn.
Poor driving choices lead to pot confiscation, charges

Gang task force officers saw a blue Nissan heading south on Oak Park near 32nd. The occupants wore no seatbelts. The car was also using the parking lane to pass stopped traffic on the right. When pulled over, driver Fabian Verdin, 19, of the 4400 block of Kenilworth, Stickney, and his 18-year-old passenge Nicholas Alvarez, also of Stickney, were seen engaging in furtive movements, so both men were asked to step out of the car. A patdown of Alvarez recovered two plastic bags of marijuana. Another large plastic bag of pot was found on the rear floorboard of the Nissan. Between the big bag and the little ones, the total weight of marijuana recovered on the stop was 22.4 grams.
Non-paying tenant accuses landlord

A man living in the 3100 block of Harlem, who has not piad his rent in months, told police his landlord pushed him in the back. The landlord was charged with battery.
Like weeds, graffiti vandals thrive in heat

Gang graffiti was removed from garage doors in the 1400 block of Euclid and the 2100 block of Wenonah. Residents of one northeast Berwyn block called police to ask for extra patrols because of the warm-weather blossoming of graffiti there.

Komensky School window hit with pellets

A school custodian reported someone shot two pellets at a second-story window at Komensky School, 2515 Cuyler. The damaged window was 2’ by 3’.

A concerned citizen reported syringes on the sidewalk in the 6600 block of Roosevelt. Officers arrived to find 96 total insulin syringe kits—most hidden under bushes, and several lying on the sidewalk. They were recovered and disposed of.
Basement copper theft

Someone used brute force to open the door to a basement in the 3500 block of Home. The burglar stole a number of copper items used for building and repair.

A 19-year-old man told police someone stole his 1995 Cadillac Seville, which he left parked and locked in the 6400 block of 27th. The man said the car contained his wallet with driver’s license, credit cards and $50 cash; a baby seat, a stroller, an in-dashboard TV and two 6-inch headrest TVs.
Train’s 40-minute sit gets railroad charged with safety violation

Police made a criminal complaint against Burlington Northern Railroad after a freight train stopped for 40 minutes at 26th St, 20 feet east of Harlem, stalling traffic. The gates were down for that 40 minutes. Police were alerted by calls about cars driving around the gates.
Large disturbed man fights police

A 50-year-old man who had just escaped from MacNeal Hospital informed the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad that he intended to commit suicide by train.
Police found him and returned him to the emergency room. An hour later, the man ran back out of MacNeal wearing a hospital gown, and returned to his residence in the 3100 block of Oak Park Avenue. Police found him once more and were escorting him to a hospital room when he broke free and ran. Three officers tried to grab the 280-pound man, who kneed one officer in the groin, then punched a hospital guard in the face and threatened to kill him. It took four men to control the escapee, who was finally handcuffed and readmitted to the hospital. When released, he will be charged with battery and resisting arrest.
DUI, felony possession for cocaine-toting Cicero man

A Nissan Maxima ran a red light at Lombard and Cermak, nearly hitting a Berwyn squad car. When stopped, 39-year-old driver Javier Padilla of Cicero told the officer everything was ok and he was all right. He seemed confused and the officer could smell alcohol on his breath. As the man was not fluent in English, a Cicero detective had to be called to translate for him. Padilla failed all his field sobriety tests after multiple explanations of them. A patdown revealed a clear bag of cocaine in his pants pocket. He refused to cooperate with a Breathalyzer test at the police station. Padilla was ticketed for blowing the stop, DUI and not wearing a seat belt. In addition, the assistant state’s attorney approved a felony charge for possession of a controlled substance.
