Unfriendly friends

September 16, 2007, 8:07 AM
Police were dispatched to the 1900 block of Scoville on a reported assault.  They were met by a 33-year-old woman from that block who said a man punched her twice in the face; she also complained of pain in her shoulder.  The woman said she and man from the 3000 block of Wesley were visiting a male friend, age 39, in the 1200 block of Kenilworth.  Once inside, the woman said, her companion removed about $100 from her purse as it sat on a table.  She said when she tried to prevent him from leaving, he slugged her twice and pushed her against a doorway.  Police spoke to the companion, who denied the theft accusation, and said it was the 39-year-old man who “got physical” with the woman.  When questioned a second time, the woman admitted it was really their host who hit her with his fist; she said she changed the story initially because she did not want to get him in trouble. She signed a complaint of battery against one man, and theft against the other.

Woman fights tooth and bag to avoid arrest

September 15, 2007, 12:43 AM
Police answered a call about a woman on the ground.  In the alley of the 7100 block of Stanley, they found Brandy L. Miller, 31, of the 700 block of west Barry, Chicago.  Her left pant leg was torn from the hip to the hem and police noticed the odor of alcohol on her breath.  Asked why she was on the ground, the woman said she fell off a third-floor porch and her lungs were hurting her. She had no visible injuries.
An ambulance came.  Miller grew uncooperative and began to say she did not fall.  She told police she was not going anywhere in an ambulance, and if they tried to make her do so, they were “going to be boxing.”
Miller refused to answer paramedics’ questions and tried to get cigarettes from her handbag, which was placed on the hood of a squad car.  An officer told her she could not smoke just now, but needed to let the paramedics do their job.  Police said Miller grew combative, grabbing an officer’s hand and swinging her fists.  She managed to grab her handbag off the car and tried to strike the officer with it.  She also tried to bite his arm.  Two officers were able to take her into custody.  Miller was charged with resisting arrest and battery to a police officer.

After many such disturbances, one grows blasé …

September 12, 2007, 6:43 PM
A caller reported a disturbance in the 1800 block of Gunderson:  a woman screaming for help in a doorway, while someone behind her tried to drag her back inside.  Police spoke with the woman, age 41, who said she heard a loud noise as she lay on her bed watching TV, and went to investigate.
Entering the kitchen, she found her ex-boyfriend at the window.  She screamed, “What do you want?” The 51-year-old man yelled at her to open the door. She told him repeatedly to leave, but her grew angry and yelled, “Open the f------ door!”
The woman said she then ran out her front door and yelled for someone to call police, since she had no phone.  She told police the ex-boyfriend then pushed into the flat, dragged her into the bedroom, choked and punched her, and ran out. Handprints were recovered at the scene.  The victim described the man’s van:  white with a black passenger door and a temporary plate; she thought police could find it at a location in Maywood.
Officers canvassed neighbors for information, but were told that since loud commotions at that address were such a common occurrence, the neighbors thought nothing of it.

Trashpicker picks fight with cop

September 12, 2007, 8:27 AM
An officer driving westbound on 27th noticed a woman tipping over trashbins in the Grove/Kenilworth alley; she was taking beer cans and metal and placing them in a shopping cart.  The officer recognized the man from many complaints over the summer.  Residents objected to her opening the plastic trash bags in their bins, searching for items of interest, then leaving the bags open and trash lying in the alley or behind apartment buildings.  The 60-year-old woman, a resident of the 2700 block of East, had been warned many times to cease and desist.  At one point, she got a local ordinance ticket, but failed to appear in court.  With this in mind, the officer approached the woman.  She became belligerent and attempted to punch the officer in the face.  He got her right hand cuffed but she pulled away and backup was required to subdue her.  The woman was arrested for illegal garbage collecting and assault.

Neighbors alarmed by screams, hitting

September 6, 2007, 2:39 AM
Concerned callers reported a disturbance in the 1600 block of East.  Police found a 21-year-old Berwyn woman there with visible injuries: scratches on her shoulder, and a large swollen bruise on her forehead.  Two officers at the rear of the building noticed a man stagger into the back yard from the alley; he had scratches on his neck. The man told police he and his wife went for drinks at Lalo, came home, argued, and she choked him.  He said she tried to stab him, and pulled up his shirt:  police looked but saw no injuries.  The wife agreed they went out, but only to discuss his financial support for her and the kids. She said when they returned to his place on East, he drank even more, then verbally abused her and grabbed her to prevent her from leaving.  They struggled, she said, and fell onto the patio, where he choked her.  The wife said she broke free, but her estranged husband tackled her, punched her and threw a chair at her head.  Her screams induced a neighbor to call police; a witness confirmed the wife’s account.  The wife signed a complaint for domestic battery against the man.
